Dining Room Disaster

Just so you know: My intent is to not leave it this way.

My goal is to have it beautiful by Easter.

Mind you, no one will see it.

That's okay.

We'll take treats and filled eggs and drop them off at grandchildren's homes and then their moms and dads can videotape them enjoying them.

We'll go to services online.

We'll have something wonderful for dinner.

And we'll pray for all the sad and sick souls dealing with this virus. Because that's exactly what God would want us to do.

But in the meantime, when I realized I was going to be quarantined for fourteen days, and that my son's job as a substitute teacher ended with the closing of schools, I got the brilliant idea of painting the dining room.

So Beth and Zach got me everything I needed at Home Depot. I even let them pick the colors...

And so it began.

I discovered Zach doesn't like painting.

Farmer Dave only does it when I force him to, and he's been sick, so I didn't have the heart to be mean. Besides, he did the big family room last year.

So I tackled in. First, the room was all based around this:

I found this chandelier online at Great Windsor Chairs, a cool furniture store in Pennsylvania and my youngest boys bought it for me ten years ago.... When i saw this lamp, I knew how I wanted the room to look. Like springtime, all year, but with colors that I could also use for fall and Christmas. No one cares about summer, who is inside during summer??? No one!!!

So this week I cleaned the walls, moved furniture, scrubbed baseboards, painted baseboards, cut in around all the edges in this room, then painted the walls.

PHEW!!!!!

And I wrote a lot.

So that was good because no one pays me to paint!!!

But I love painting.

I do not love the MESS....

But I find painting peaceful and rewarding, which is good because there's always something to be painted!

Table is one of my dumping grounds......

I realized I need to coordinate all of my electrical sockets/switches. I got matching wall plate covers in white wood, but the outlets need to be changed. And two of the switches are black.... So that's a bad combo.

I will order them and get that taken care of next week.
Mindy, remember going through all this? It's like a mom version of the Never-Ending Story!

Today I'm rolling the ceiling. It's funny, you don't realize how quickly a ceiling 'grays' until you put fresh paint on it. Zach cut in around the ceiling, and I'll roll it and we'll have two major parts done.

THEN THE FLOOR.

We move all the furniture out of the room and paint the floor.

Then we move all of the furniture back into the room.

The bookcases are a puzzle to me.  I'm not sure if I want them white or yellow. I've already painted the scalloping yellow, but I'm wondering if a bright white might not make the yellow stand out better, rather than submerge it all into the one tone.... I welcome your thoughts, and I might test it out to see what I think.

I probably won't get the rose-toned trim done before Easter. That's okay. I can live with that until next fall, because once farm season stops, no one worries about the inside of the house. There's just too much to do outside!!!

But that's what I've been up to this week, getting this project underway and feeling good about how it's coming.

The mess will disappear and I will love this room again, but right now it's a jumble... which means I've got my work cut out for me!

Wishing you all a safe and happy and healthy weekend. God bless you!

  1. I can't tell you how much I love this, Ruthy. And I feel the way you do about painting. It's so gratifying. Although, it did lose some of its luster, okay, a lot of its luster, when I had to paint our entire house. Ceilings, walls, trim. But to transform a room... Always a joy. Cleaning up the mess and finding a place for everything on that table? Not so much. ;)

Now about those bookshelves. I'm assuming you're talking about the inside when you're contemplating the white. Here's a suggestion that doesn't involve any commitment. Get some white paper (wrapping, even copy paper) and cover the back wall with it to make it look as though it's been painted. That way you can get a feel for how it will look. Step back and look at it for a few days to determine if you love or hate it. I have a friend who likes to change things up frequently, so she uses wrapping paper with double-stick tape to line her cabinets and it looks great. She's able to change it at will and even make it seasonal. But in your case, it'd be more like a test drive. And I'm sure you have printer paper in the house, so you won't even have to leave. I can't wait to hear what you decide AND to see the completed project.

    1. That's actually a great idea! This is why I have smart friends. Because they're smart!!!!

I got the first coat on the ceiling and it just amazes me that we thought it was white.... and now that it's painted, it actually is white. This room has those fibrous tiles, they used those in a couple of rooms, and the ceiling is too pretty to tear it all out and re-do with wallboard, but it drinks paint. Like a straw.... sllllluuuurrrrpppp..... So another coat tomorrow.

But yes, when you guys did that whole house, I was like WHAT????? because I know how hard a couple of rooms are. But I'm sure it's such a joy now that you're done and in... and cow friends, all over the place. I love it!

    2. Great idea, Mindy!! I'll have to remember that!

Our son and his wife are getting their interior painted right now on the house they just bought. We're getting update photos each day. So exciting!

  2. This room is going to look beautiful, Ruthy!

And I get the light. I often want to center a room around a single point - a lamp, a table, a chair. The problem is that in the past, once I've done that, it's time to move again. :-(

But in this house, the centerpiece of every room except one are the windows that look to the west - to the mountains and Mt. Rushmore. So everything is centered on THAT! So easy, and no curtains to worry about!

BTW - Mindy's suggestion is BRILLIANT!

    1. Right???? Mindy gets the smart-as-a-whip award, absolutely!!!!

And your view is spectacular. It's God's country. So vast. So open.

I do love living in forestland. There are trees and woods everywhere, except where you till or mow.

But there's something amazing about a vista!!!!

  3. Ruthy, you are a brave soul. Painting walls is a nightmare for me. I'm with Farmer Dave! :)

I'm relieved, though, because your post title made me fear you hated the color. So I'm glad the disaster is only temporary while the painting is going on!

We actually had to have a plumber come out the other day. That's our excitement for the week. haha

    1. hahahahah! I have broken so many things while trying to fix plumbing, but the new plumbing with flex hoses and pvc pipe is so much easier!!!! Hallelujah chorus being sung!!!!!

The color is really pretty... and it brings sunlight into the room, but the big thing was getting the ceiling coat done.... and now that reflects the sunlight. I always do ceilings with a little gloss, a satin gloss because I love the reflection of light. It makes me happy.

  4. I'm gobsmacked at your get-it-done-itiveness. lol I like Mindy's idea of trying out the white with paper first. I like the idea of painting the back of the bookshelves white but I love the idea of using wrapping paper even more. I did that with my bookshelves but now they are so jammed with books you can't tell. Bwahahaha! But I have one little built in cupboard with a glass door in my living room and I papered the back with uber cool and paisley print wrapping paper and I use the shelves for display so you can see the pattern and I love it. It makes me happy every time I look at it. :-)

You could use wall paper ends too. I saw this neat idea on pinterest where they did a patchwork quilt of wall paper pages from the sample books on the back of this huge wardrobe and it looked sooooooooo cool.

    1. Oh, I bet that would be cool, Kav... I can just imagine it!

Now I have to think about the wrapping paper idea... because I could have fun with that, and these shelves all come out. So I could paper the back wall and go from there. Must puzzle on this because I've never done that before and i did promise myself I'd never use wallpaper again after Christina and I spent weeks scraping the living room walls.

WE cringe at the thought now. :)

    2. Ruthy, all you need to secure the paper is some double-sided tape. If you grow tired of it or want to change it, it's easy peasy.

    3. I will order some. Have "buy" button, will travel! :)

  5. Now I'm tired--from hearing about Ruthy the Energizer Bunny's projects! I wish I had your energy, and I wish I loved painting. The older I get, the more I don't like it. I'll clean up the mess if you'll come and paint for me!

I like Mindy's idea about trying white paper. Make sure you post photos when it's all done.

    2. You're on, Ruthy! I guess we'll have to wait until this virus mess is over, though. Let me know when you're ready for a trip to Utah. I have extra beds and you're always welcome. Bring Beth with you!
