Summertime and the Living is Easy

Yup, it's official. I'm on summer vacation!

Which means it's time for the flip side of my personality to kick into gear. Time for Writer Cate to take over.

It also means it's time for Healthy Writer Cate to take over.

Sadly, this followed me home.

OOPS!

It was not alone.

Delicious food just jumps into the basket - and then onto the hips.

This is the peril of being Writer Cate.

Teacher Cate spends the entire day on her feet, running up and down flights of stairs, walking around the classroom, fast walking to the subway - 15 minutes to and from, twice a day.

So you see, donuts and cookies just won't cut it in the summer.

To be fair, they weren't quit cutting it before school ended. The scale was inching upwards and waistlines were tightening.

So, Summertime, and it's time to be ruthless.

Expect to see recipes with more of this

I keep a bowl of blueberries in the refrigerator
and grab them when I'm craving a snack.

There are still some treats.

They were strategically placed in my basket today.
The freezer is stocked with salmon and haddock and shrimp. And frozen blueberries for smoothies.

However, I'm over on Seekerville today blogging about procrastination, so I may have to have a donut first. Who will join me?

Are you inclined towards healthier eating in the summer? I feel like we always used to be because of the heat, but now with AC, there's not the waning appetite to help.

I'm off to a good start. This was dinner tonight.

Kale, oranges, blueberries, sunflower seeds, avocado slices, salmon, and some croutons.
It was really good.

  1. Mmm salmon salad! Our kitchen is so warm right now it is hard to cook. Not to mention lack of counter space! I have focused on making sure I have healthier options for my husband to take on the road. Freezer meals, sandwiches, and wraps. Apparently tuna salad on a "fancy" tortilla is good. He did request some dried fruit so I picked up some mangos and kiwi. Those will go in the dehydrator soon. I should keep blueberries on hand. They are kind of like olives. (Not in flavor) I could sit and eat a whole bowl of frozen blueberries. Now I must look into this blueberries in a salad......I bet I could make a similar salad to a spinach strawberry salad with a homemade dressing and just use blueberry or both!

    1. Both are good!

And thank you for taking such good care of your hubby. :-)

    2. I think blueberries would work equally as well as strawberries, Katie. I've used both. And I totally hear you on the hot kitchen problem. :(

So you have a dehydrator? I'd love to know more about that. I bought some fancy dehydrated beets last night and they were SO good, but SO expensive.

    3. I'm not sure how much cheaper my mangos are at 78 cents a piece! However I do know what's in them at least. Kiwi is happening tomorrow and then Bananas for me! I got a nicer one from the kitchen store in Rapid City when I got a gift card for Christmas! I don't use it as much as I should, but I love love dried bananas, strawberries, and peaches. It's almost a waste because the dried fruit goes so quick! Jerky is on my list. Waiting until we have more space and MAYBE someone will bring me home a deer for that. You can make fruit roll ups too, but I have a hard time with that. Just not as skilled as my grandma at that.

  2. Oh, I'm loving the idea of fruit and salad right now! And Cate, you're right, the time for good choices is always "now"...

Although I am going to the donut shop on Friday, so I might be making that up!

My life is the opposite. Winter is my quieter writing time and then spring/summer hits with farm stuff and there is very little sitting time even though I have two lovely porches! The kids sit... and rock... and muse and eat frozen pops, but Grammy has work to do, so I never have to think about what I eat until November....

AND THEN IT'S BACK TO REALITY.

And you would think I'd just adjust.

    Nope.

    Nope.

    Nope.

But the good thing is that as smart women, we see the time frame and we do what needs to be done, and summer salads and stuff tossed on the grill makes me happy!

    It's all good!

    1. First the salad, then the donut. And it all balances out, right? My problem is portion control. Isn't that so much better a word than gluttony? Maybe if I called it gluttony, I'd stop at one.
      But they are mini donuts.

    2. I was actually thinking of how your seasons oppose mine. It's like we're in different hemispheres rather than in the same state.

  3. Don't you just hate it when donuts accost you at the grocery store? I'm heading out to one now...lets hope I can dodge their wiley ways. :-) I'd like to say that I eat more healthy in the summer but I discovered the joy that is frozen custard last year so...

    1. They're very aggressive! And they overstay their welcome on your hips!!!!!

Ah, I get the frozen custard problem Gelato is my weakness.

  4. Frozen custard is my downfall, Kav... any ice cream, but I do love my Abbott's Frozen Custard, a WNY favorite. SIGH... but it's LEGAL!!!! So it can't be all bad, right?

    Wait.

Smoking pot is legal in a bunch of places now, and that kind of ruins my reasoning. DAGNABBIT!!!!

    1. Here's my strategy: Keep the ice cream out of the house, so I only eat it when I go to Armadillos (Rapid City's finest ice cream shop!)

    2. That sounds like a sound strategy, Jan. I know any form of ice cream = instant weight gain, so it's easier for me to avoid in the supermarket - most of the time.

    3. Jan if only someone else understood that theory 😂

  5. Your salad looks wonderful, Cate! But those donuts...so tempting!

    1. Such is life, right? The bad parts (like procrastinating) are often tempting.

  6. I love salads with fruit! I had a salad with grilled chicken, strawberries, and orange slices for lunch yesterday. Hubby picked it up for me at my favorite cafe on his way home. The great thing about him picking it up and bringing it to me instead of me going there to eat was that I wasn't tempted by the sweets.

    1. Between you and Katie, I'm craving strawberries in my salad. I walked past the greenmarket on Sunday morning and I could smell the heavenly scent of fresh strawberries in the sun. Unfortunately, I was walking the dog and had no money on me. I'll have to make a point of going back this weekend.

And yes, Rhonda. No sweets to tempt. That's actually why I avoid the farmers market when I have money with me. Too many luscious baked goods. But who needs them when you have such natural sweetness in your salad?

  7. Mary Cate, don't you just love how doughnuts can jump?! ;)

I do seem to crave fruits and vegetables more in the summer. They just seem lighter--and of course are in season. Right now I'm really enjoying fresh cherries! And we've had nectarines and peaches over the last few weeks as well. Twice during the last week I've made veggies to eat over pasta. I used fresh sugarsnap peas (sliced), fresh green beans (sliced), fresh corn (cut off the cob), canned tomatoes, and olives. So yummy!

  8. Now that's an interesting salad, Mary Cate. Very pretty. As for the donuts and cookies, well, those were simply so you could celebrate the beginning of your summer.
