This year is the 200th anniversary of the beloved Christmas carol, "Silent Night."
Think of that. 200 years of Silent Night...
Such a simple carol...who would think that this quiet, gentle song could change everything, even for a few short hours...
On this Christmas Eve of 2018, may the peace of Christ reign in your hearts.
Oh, Jan! I love that you shared this today. That Sainsbury's ad was so much in my mind this year that with my 8th grade, I wrote a play about the Christmas Truce. They performed it for the entire school on Friday. A group of my students learned to sing Stille Nacht. When the German and English versions blended together, it brought tears to many an eye - including mine.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a Blessed Christmas.
What a great idea, Cate! And a memorable way to remember a war that is largely forgotten.
DeleteMerry Christmas to you!
Beautiful. While living in Chicago our church family every Christmas Eve sang Stille Nacht in 19 different languages. Wished I had recorded the adoration. Joyeux Noel is a movie I always showed my German classes in December. So much history in one Carol.
DeleteOh, this is so beautiful! I'm from a very Irish and English/Dutch blended family, but my husband's grandparents were German immigrants. They came over in the early 1900s and Grandma loved Stille Nacht... but she couldn't sing. So when I was a young bride I went to visit her and sang it for her... and she got teary-eyed.
DeleteWe'd learned it in 8th grade choir for Midnight Mass at the cathedral in Rochester and I can still sing it... and remember Grandma's face. :)
So beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing this. Oma, I can't imagine in 19 different languages.
What a treat that must have been!
I've never seen this before, Jan.
ReplyDeleteI am humbled.
