'Tis the season of cookies and my kids saw a giant container of Nutella at Walmart. And so.... It would be wrong to just eat it with a spoon, right? (Ok, just play along.)
Plus, it seemed as if Mr. MANLY MIXER (still not sure what his name is, but we're working on getting acquainted) was in the holiday mood. Looks like he's been using the snowflake paper punch!
So, this recipe is the essence of EASE.
1 cup softened Nutella
1 cup chilled Nutella
1 cup flour
1 egg
Got that? One, one, one, one. We're not even making it to the number TWO.
But.... I've got six kids so I have to double. I'll use those math skills and... two cups of softened Nutella, two cups of chilled Nutella (not in the picture), two cups flour, two eggs.
Mic the flour, softened Nutella, and egg in a bowl. Mr. Manly Mixer was really enjoying this part. Flatten in a 3 inch disc shape. Kids were thrilled with this. Mash, mash, mashity-mash.
Take the Nutella from the fridge. (I had a feeling it would really slow things down if we were hacking the Nutella out of the jar as we try to assemble the cookies. Key to kids in the kitchen? Be prepared... So, I had an older kid hack out the Nutella into 1/2 tsp bits and put it back in the fridge. I'm sort of surprised there was anything left after she performed that task.)
Flattern another cookie dough round and lay over the top. Now, these can be square, like ravioli, but who's got time for that? Plus, the circle is the most perfect shape in nature.
While they're cooking at 350F for 8-10 minutes, make some tasty tea.
Fresh from the oven, sprinkle with powdered sugar. It makes them look more festive (and less like poop, which someone said on facebook).
Crack them open.... Best eaten right away, so the Nutella inside is soft and warm. We actually took these to an ice skating party and they were delicious the next day!Until next week, Christmas EVE!!!!
These are lovely, and second, I am certain, only to eating Nutella naked on a spoon.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried naked chilled Nutella? I was surprised how good it was! Sort of like a truffle, because it slowly melted.

Kids would like that, wouldn't they? LOL
ReplyDeleteHAHA! We have a joke about 'flaming reindeer poop'. We made a gingerbread house once and the kids decorated it... and on top someone had left a trail of red candy balls coming from the reindeer. My oldest child said it was flaming reindeer poo and we just never forgot that.

ReplyDeleteWell, personally... I think it could have used a little.... butter? Something. It tastes like more of a tea cookie than a soft chocolate cookies (except for the nutella inside).
DeleteOh, I can see my kids being all over this one. We LOVE Nutella--by the spoonful! These look absolutely wonderful. And I happen to have one of those giant jars of Nutella. Hmm...Guess I should check to see just how many spoonfuls are missing though. ;)

HAHAHA! Um, there were moments of deep silence, filled with the sound of secret tasting. I can't prove it, but the mama sense knew there was Nutella being consumed.
DeleteMy son Zach, lawyer boy, a king of long-distance running used to eat Nutella on bread constantly. We bought it long before they had it at Sam's Club and Zach half-existed on Nutella. We did not argue.... fast runners equate scholarship opportunities ergo Eat What You LIke, Runner Boy!!!! That is my tried and true example of whatever it takes!

DeleteThe cookies look so good... and so easy to make! But once I discovered the nutritional content of Nutella and realized it was not the healthy breakfast food it was advertised to be, I was less enthusiastic about trying it, so I never have.

11g fat (3.5g of which are saturated)
21 grams of sugar
3g protein
I'm more of a peanut butter fan -- just as many calories and fat in it, of course, but only 1 gm of sugar and it has twice as much protein.
Then, too, I love it blended with chocolate, so who am I kidding? Nothing that tastes that good can possibly be good for us anyway, right?
LOL. I remember someone suing Nutella for being unhealthy. Ummmm, look at the back. It doesn't take a genius to read the label. And hazelnut butter combined with chocolate is not going to clear out your arteries.
DeleteOooh, oooh, oooh! I have a recipe for homemade nutella-like-hazelnut chocolate spread (no copyright infringement here!). There are lots of these recipes on the internet, and I've been wanting to try a sugar-free version using stevia. This recipe sounds like the perfect excuse to go ahead and do it!

Oh, that sounds very cool! Let us know how it goes! I just don't care for the flavor of stevia. If there was a honey version, I could probably deal with that. But any processed, natural or unnatural, sugar substitute gives me shudders. It just tastes very off to me.
DeleteThese look amazing! We tried some Nutella cookies from Pinterest but were disappointed (plus, they were tons of work). So we'll give this a go! Now must go buy some more of the stuff. We've most recently had the chocolate Jiff Whips.
