Coffee Chat!

Missy, here. And it's time for our Wednesday coffee chat! Pull up a comfy chair and let's talk about...

MOVIES!

I talked about movies on the Craftie Ladies of Romance blog the other day and had a good time hearing from others. So I wanted to bring the conversation over here as well.

Missy Tippens, here. I thought we'd talk movies today.

On Sunday, I went with some friends to see Snow White and the Huntsman. Loved it! It was a little frightening, and a little violent. But so thrilling to see a heroine who was strong and did what she felt she had to do to save her people.

I'm really looking forward to going to see Disney's Brave for the same reason. A determined, spunky heroine! If y'all haven't seen the trailer for this one, you need to! (click here)

What movies have you seen lately that you loved? Or that you didn't love? And do you love movies where the heroine saves the day?

  1. Oh Missy, this is embarrassing. I almost never go to the movies. Crazy if you think I once worked for Columbia Pictures.

I do sometimes watch them on my computer.

I was supposed to see Hung Games with my daughter but she's had work nearly every night.

Guess that makes me a failure at coffee chat. :(

    1. Ooops - that was supposed to say Hunger Games.

  2. I usually do better with a re-watch since I like to know what happens before I can relax (yes I often skim books to the end to see what happens there too!) some surprises I just don't like. I do better with kid stuff (though Lion King still upsets me and that was back in '94!) and comedy or romantic comedy.

the latest movie I saw was The Lorax at the el-cheapo movie theater as I call it - $1.50 and $1 on Tuesdays (I splurged for the 1.50 night LOL!) I enjoyed it. I also liked Cars 2 and the Pooh movie that was out - think it was Pooh - I'm wanting to see Brave though.

I'm not sure I like the heroine to save the day - I probably should but I like a hunky hero to do it and am happy if the heroine isn't stupid or if she uses her brain and maybe some physical stuff - I like the girl in the Harry Potter movies - Hermione? can't ever remember her name - but she chills out and is smart though I've only seen the 1st 2 movies. I also liked Julia Roberts in Pelican Brief or rather the character since Roberts isn't my fave - but she was stuck in a situation totally out of her area of expertise and made the best of it. I don't like movies with violence (a few exceptions and only after I've seen the movie at least once and know what happens!) I walked out of one of the lethal weapons back in the college days - one where the bad guy was describing how painfully gibson's wife died - about mowed down my 2 friends and the rest of the aisle getting out of there. :-(

    1. I'm with you on the heroine, Susanna. I like her to be strong, witty, smart - but working with the hero, not taking over from him.

I'm definitely not a feminist. Never have been. Never will be. Did I really grow up in the 60's and 70's?

    2. I loved Pelican Brief.... I love undercover thriller type stories. And I remember that scene, Susanna, from Lethal Weapon. Bragging about how he made the wife suffer.

      I hated it, too.

  3. I'm a movie buff, too, Missy, but I'd rather watch old movies than new ones.

That's why I love Netflix and TCM :)

Hubby and I usually pick a director and watch several movies by him. My favorites are John Ford (oooh, I'll have to watch Stagecoach again soon...), Howard Hawks and Frank Capra.

My family loves the comic book movies - Captain America, Thor, The Avengers... I enjoy them enough to watch them (from Netflix, so almost free), but I don't enjoy them enough to pay to watch them in a theater.

I do that with most of the newer movies - if it looks interesting, I'll put it in the Netflix queue.

Now, when The Hobbit comes out in December, I'll be first in line!

    1. My family says I never see a movie I haven't watched before. While impossible, it's mostly true! I have my faves and I'll watch them now and again for fun. But I hate wasting time on something I'll hate...

I know, I know, it's lame. But it does save me a whole lot of money and gives me more writing time, LOL!

  4. Mary, you could never fail at the coffee chat! :)

You're going to love the Hunger Games movie. Very tense!

  5. Susanna, I do believe I've told you before that reading the ending of a book before you get there is AGAINST THE LAW!!!!

    hahaha

I love those dollar theaters! I try to go whenever I can. I'm usually so behind on movies that the timing works pretty well.

  6. Jan, the fun thing about Snow White is that the hero (or one of them anyway--we may have a sequel!) saved her. And he also stood by her to protect her and fight with her. Very sigh worthy!!! And so hunky. And they left the ending open for interpretation. :)

  7. Jan, my mom, dad and sister all watch old movies! When we go up there to visit, that's all that's on. That and Masterpiece Theater.

And that could get us talking about Downton Abbey!!

    1. I'm not even thinking about Downton Abbey until I get this book sent in. I'm on my last read-through, then I'm hitting send.

      Ten days early.

      I've always been an over-achiever :)

  9. My family just generally hates seeing a movie with me because I'm always saying what's going to happen before it does! My daughter got so aggravated at Hunger Games! (I haven't read the books so didn't know). :)
