Not Quite the Flu

Today's post was going to be a step-by-step lesson in baking biscuits,

but then I got hit with the nasty bug that's been going around town, so the biscuits will have to wait until next week.

No, it isn't the flu, but has the same symptoms...sore throat, fever, and days of recovery. The only difference was that the fever isn't as high, and I can actually do things like...oh...think. Put words together coherently.

(Although, after reading this post, you may disagree with that last part!)

I had read Julie's post about preparing for the flu a couple weeks ago (you can re-read that post here - in fact, I recommend it), and I had done some preparation.

I have a chicken in the freezer, waiting to be made into stock. But it's still frozen, so that's no good. But I do have some of this:

And I have a good supply of my favorite tea:

So I doctored myself as best I could with plenty of fluids, plenty of rest and cough medicine when I wanted to get some sleep.

Meanwhile, the dogs had to make do and entertain themselves (chewies come in handy for times like these!)

We've noticed that Thatcher is one of those dogs who LOVES his food.

Well, not his food so much as everyone else's food.

Especially Wynter's.

Because we feed him baby food, and he's not a baby. He wants to eat big dog food.

I call it "old lady food," since it's for "older" dogs.

But he doesn't care.

He just waits.

And waits.

Until she's done...and then wallows in disappointment when I put her dish up and he's forced to eat baby food.

Again.

Poor puppy.

(By the way, that shopping bag in the pictures? Best cat toy EVER!!!)

So, what is your favorite home remedy when a virus hits your house? Chat about it while I have another cup of chicken broth....

    1. Thanks, Virginia!

BTW, Seasons of Hope is on my afternoon to-do list today: a sweet Christmas book, warm blanket, hot chocolate and a fire in the wood stove.... I think it sounds perfect for a snowy day when I'm under the weather :)

  2. Oh, feel better. BTW we are keeping the grandkidlets and the infamous cough before the storm hit. Yah, THAT cough. At least it wasn't in Mass!

We are hoping someone just ate too many cheese cubes at the wedding reception before dinner.

Healing prayers your way. And gotta tell you Thatcher looks so stately.

    1. Oh, Julie, I'd rather go through almost anything than deal with THAT cough! I'm with Virginia's husband there!

      Hope they already feel better.

  3. Take care of yourself Jan! I have no remedies really, but to avoid dairy and drink hot salty fluids.

Praying for your situation as well, Julie!

    1. When it's a cold virus, about all you can do is keep up with the fluids and rest, right?

Brewed cocoa is sitting at my elbow right now....

  4. Oh Jan -- hope you feel better soon! And even in the midst of your feeling yuckiness you managed to post not one but 5 Thatcher pictures. My heart is happy (but not over your sickness!) Poor baby, wanting to be all grown up -- and if Wynter is on a special old lady diet kibble doesn't he realize that it doesn't taste as good as his high energy stuff?! Silly puppy!

    1. Silly puppy is right! Doesn't "Healthy Development" sound much better than "Active Longevity"?

  5. Jan, hope you feel better! Take good care of yourself.

Thatcher is so cute! We have food envy around here as well when I'm dog sitting my grand dog. Grand dog gets designer food (that my son sends). My dog gets Purina senior food. My dog is always trying to sneak over and eat the yummy expensive stuff! LOL

  6. I'd better stock up...and hope I don't get the flu or whatever this nasty bug is...yucky and no one to take care of me or listen to me whine(though my married friends say they don't either!)
my lab was my chow hound - she could watch every bite you took and turn on the 'eyes' - my shepherd wants what you have but otherwise food is just food to her.
just finished VIrginia's book - and I must be awful because I dont' see the heroine had a single thing to be sorry about in her past LOL! I mean, I don't like reporters either but if you do like that other girl was doing then things like that happen. wanted the hero for myself though..sigh...scientific type bet he looked good in a lab coat...

    1. I'm going to start Virginia's book this afternoon! Can hardly wait, especially after your teaser :)

I finished Ruthy's new one - Running on Empty - two nights ago. Wow. I'm not even sure what I'm going to write in my review. I'm afraid I won't be able to do it justice.

One big advantage of being sick - no energy to do anything else, so I've been getting a lot of reading and knitting in :)

  7. Jan, I hope you feel better soon. Hubby came back from a business trip Saturday with a cold, so I've been pumping him full of Echinacea and Airborne, then I made a big pot of chicken soup with extra garlic and red pepper flakes. Wish I could bring you some.

He's still feeling a little on the puny side, but I think he's on the mend. Praying I don't get it. Hmm...I should start taking that Echinacea and Airborne too, now that I think of it.

    2. You Texans. Don't you know it's November? Stuff isn't supposed to be blooming now!

Snow is a great way to get rid of allergies :)

And Mindy - stay healthy! Washing hands is the BEST way to keep from getting stuff.

I wish I had remembered that two weeks ago when my son had this cold....

  8. Oh, Jan, ugh. So sorry! I hate getting sick, I'm a BIG BABY when I'm sick and I want someone to take care of me and Dave's not exactly Nurse Dave if you know what I mean.

    Hugging you from upstate!

    1. Thanks for the hugs!

Cold-like symptoms are going away, but I still feel wiped out. Even watching television is tiring.

  9. Hope you feel better. Sleep and Vitamin C and soup are the only solution.
