Missy, here. The Belle. I had another post ready to go (if you're interested in risotto, be sure to come back next Friday!), but I decided this one can't wait. Because the little fruit I wanted to talk about is at the end of its season (the season typically ends in April).
And you don't want to miss out.
(By the way, I have no relation to the company and get no benefit from talking about it!) :)
I'm talking about Cuties.
California Mandarins.
I've always heard of these little fruits and thought of them as kids snacks--a gimmick that was probably over-priced. So I bought other types of clementines and tangerines and other small oranges, trying to find something sweet enough for my taste. I did find a fantastic tangerine this winter called Minneola, which was very sweet, and I really enjoyed them.
But on a recent trip to the store, I found large bags of Cuties on sale and decided to give them a try. They were advertised as little (perfect for kids), seedless, easy to peel and sweet. You've probably all seen the TV commercials, haven't you? I think they need to also market them to adults.
When I tried one, I was totally hooked! They're everything they say they are and more. I bought another case of them at the grocery last week and tend to eat them two or three at a time!
Here's a shot of me holding one from the later batch. The later ones were a bit larger but every bit as sweet and easy to peel. With the earlier batch, you could pop a whole one in your mouth. Very small and portable. My daughter loves to take a couple for lunch.
So I've found a new favorite snack--healthy snack! What's your favorite healthy snack?

I love these things! I had no idea they were seasonal though- thought they were year-round though I tend to buy fruit that's on sale so duh guess they are seasonal since they're not on sale all the time. I've been unlucky a few tmes with them - bag went bad quick though probably just that store keeping them too long or tossing the bags around stocking - they're also right up there with bananas on attracting gnats :-(
ReplyDeletehmm healthy snacks for e are apple, bananas, and cuties! and I alsolike the light greek yogurt - dannon and yoplaint has a 100 calorie one - not so sure with the sweetener in them but the less sugar helps me.
Susanna
Susanna, I've found they keep much better in the fridge.
ReplyDeleteI also love the light Greek yogurt! The one I get is 80 calories.
hmm hadn't thought about the fridge! duh susanna! but I"ve never liked cold oranges or bananas or apples...the only fruit I put in the fridge is grapes - and berries..and watermelon that's been cut...will have to do that! maybe I can let them sit out a little while before I eat them.
Deleteback to bed for me!
Susanna
Susanna, they do hurt my teeth when they're cold! :)
DeleteMissy, yes to the fridge... and I buy a 5lb. bag every week. The babies love them... the pre-schoolers love them... the school kids love them... and don't they taste like 1 GAZILLION times better than tangerines we had back in the day? My kids hated tangerines.... I didn't like them, either. But I love these guys!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, they are worth an entire post of wonderfulness and praise!
I actually bought a bag last night at Sam's Club.... and 4 lb. of Strawberries and a bunch of bananas that called to me, not for health purposes, but to make BANANA CREAM PIE!!!
:)
Cookies baking for roofers right now. I put editing on hold 'til tomorrow.... and today it's all about taking care of this roofing crew!
Ruthy, I'm glad you've been enjoying them too! I don't know why I waited so long.
DeleteYou're so nice to your roofers. Making all the rest of us look bad. :)

ReplyDeleteI love Cuties! They're my go-to favorite snack for winter. I also keep celery and carrots ready to eat (although I have to make sure I don't prepare too big of a batch at a time - my husband will empty the container, no matter how big it is!)
ReplyDeleteAnother healthy snack we do - although you can't eat too many in one day - is nuts. Almonds are my favorite, but we keep walnuts around, too.
And yogurt. I love yogurt.
But finally, and most important, there's chocolate. Good, dark chocolate with all those great antioxidants in it.
Banana Cream Pie...that sounds like a healthy snack, doesn't it? I mean, there's fruit right in the name!
BTW, I do think banana cream pie should count as a fruit pie. ;)
DeleteI used to do almonds too, Jan. But got burned out! :)
ReplyDeleteWe all love them around here, but when the grandboys come, I really have to stock up. Hubby eats two or three in a sitting. Great snack that won't blow anyone's diet.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to do, Mindy. I ate two while cooking dinner tonight! LOL
