Favorite Sandwiches

Happy Monday! Missy, here. And I'm doing a very quick, simple post because I've been out of town since Thursday for the Southern Kentucky Book Fest. I had a fantastic time! Saw good friends and met new ones. Met lots of readers, some who returned from last year. Signed some books. Attended workshops. And more!

Oh, and got to spend time with my family! My parents still live in Bowling Green, where the festival was held. And my sister and brother-in-law came up from Nashville. We had a great time.

One thing we did was eat at my parents' favorite restaurant, Cheddar's. I had a yummy Monte Cristo sandwich!

It's a ham and two cheeses sandwich, battered, deep friend, sprinkled with powdered sugar. Served dipped in raspberry preserves! It's tough to find a restaurant that serves a decent Monte Cristo. This one was  really good!

So what's your favorite sandwich when eating out?

  1. They deep-fry the sandwich?

    Like I do to fish?

    Really????

    Oh, tell me more!

  2. My one and only was in the French Quarter... of Disneyland! ha ha. how cool was I?
I like the idea of the raspberry dipping sauce, Missy. I really need to make them at home, and this is a good push to do so! Thanks

  3. Deb, that's so cool... Was it with the ham and two cheeses, too? Lynda on Facebook told me they do a Swiss Cheese and turkey variety.

  4. Ruthy! Are you having snow this morning??? I just saw some on the news. But I guess maybe it was upstate. Are you just getting rain?

LOL, Debra! I've eaten fantastic food from France...at Epcot! :)

    1. Both... pouring rain... big winds... then snow. But just 15 miles or so south of me, they're getting snow big time. I'm a little closer to Lake Ontario and that keeps us a little warmer, around 34 degrees...

Which doesn't seem warm at all, LOL! Back to all things being relative!

    2. Either way: miserable!!! It's April!

  5. If anyone wants to try making this at home, I meant to include a link to a recipe I watched Emeril make on Good Morning America recently. No deep frying (since I don't have a deep fryer). And the batter is more like dipping French toast.

  6. BTW, Ruthy, it uses cheddar and Swiss cheese. And ham and turkey.

    1. Well it sounds yummy, fattening and easy. And because I don't cook on weeknights when I'm working on books, something like this is fast and furious... Easy-peasy!

(Mind you, I'll take ten minutes out to help Dave, but second careers don't get built without time, right??? So I'm happy with anything folks throw my way at night. And I WOLFED a twenty-pack (well, not quite all...) of McDonald's Chicken nuggets when I was taking my kitchen/food worker certification course. At 10 PM, all diet concerns go out the window in interest of my tummy.

  7. Okay, I am going to get all technical here because I LIVE for these sandwiches. They turned the Monte Cristo into a "croque monsieur" by dipping it in an egg wash and then frying. Takes me back to Paris every time. Yes, Americans can do them pretty well but nothing beats one served in a little cafe in Paris in the spring.

And a "croque madame"? Fried egg on top of all that egg wash.

I am thinking you have given me a dinner idea for this week for sure. Cheaper than a ticket to Paris! Thanks, Missy!

  8. Julie, I didn't know that's where they came from (although it makes perfect sense if I were to think about it). :) You know, I found one recipe on The Chew where they served it with an egg on top! Wow. Talk about rich!!

    1. The egg on top won't happen here.

But dipping, frying and dipping then eating?

      I'm all over that.

Julie I can totally see you in a sidewalk cafe in gay Paris!!! Me? I'd be eating one of those Irish breakfasts at a B&B as I tour the old farm lands, LOL!

    2. Yep, in my world everything goes back to Paris and butter!

  9. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Monte Cristo sandwiches!!!

The food service company my dear husband worked for when we first got married had a recipe for them that was fantastic.

He still wishes he had latched onto one of those recipe boxes back when the company was bought out by a bigger corporation - food service companies just don't do recipes like that anymore, only restaurants.

There's a restaurant here in town that has one on their menu. The next time we go there I'm going to try it (wasn't hungry enough the first time...)

Meanwhile, I'll have to try JulieHS's version. Maybe even for lunch...

  10. Jan, up until this one at Cheddar's, I had only found one restaurant that did a good one. And that restaurant went out of business! Of course, once I got home I looked up Cheddar's to see if there's one near here. There's one about 45 minutes away, so I'm not sure I'll get over there much.

    1. We ate at Cheddar's a couple times when we lived in Lexington, but I don't remember a Monte Cristo on their menu - but it's been awhile. Maybe they've added it.

Of course, no Cheddar's here - the closest one is in Lincoln, Nebraska. But there's one in Omaha - we can get Mary Connealy to go!

    2. Yeah, we'll ask her to go eat one for us! Nice excuse to indulge. :)

  11. Y'all just keep educating me about carnivorous delights. I've never heard of Monte Cristo or deep fried sandwiches. Sigh.

My favourite place to get a mean veggie sandwich is downtown in this trendy-in-a-birkenstock-sandal-kind-of-way little place that makes its own bread. They usually have something nifty like sunflowerseed marinade or tamari spread or humous to start and then they add in all kinds of yummy things like grilled veggies and sprouts or whatever tickles your fancy...and cheese of course. Then they smooooooossssshhhhh it in a grill until everything's meltied and voila, the perfect sandwich. They're the reason I bought my own grill but my sandwiches never taste as good. :-(

We got tons of snow and it's cold and it's the first day of a loooonng week of Scholastic Book Fairing. Ugh.

  12. Kav, those sandwiches sound amazing since you didn't mention tofu. :) I lOVE hummus! I used to make it but now just buy it. I love it with chopped up calamata olives spread on pita bread.

I just had a veggie pasta lunch! A kind of clean out the fridge type thing. :)

Oh, excuse me. I was wiping the drool off of my keyboard. Missy, I love a good Monte Cristo sandwich. Been ages though.

One of my favorite sandwiches, though I rarely allow myself to indulge, is a Reuben, with some tasty corned beef, swiss, and kraut. Of course, it's gotta be on rye. Nothing else will do.

  14. I"ve heard of these but never tried them. when I eat out IF and I mean IF I order a sandwich I usually go for chicken salad and sometimes the turkey ruben at jason's deli - but since I really like their chicken salad that's the one I usually get. At Cheddars it's hard for me to order anything but the c hicken fried steak or the occasional burger - LOVE the onion rings there...OMGosh..my parents liked to eat there every now and then when they came down

    1. Oh, I love Jason's Deli. I go for their salad bar every time and pig out!

I'm getting all nostalgic reminiscing about restaurants in cities where we used to live, but I shouldn't! We have great restaurants here, too!
