Spicy Chocolate!

Missy, here. I'm sharing a recipe today that I saw and went crazy over. And since we recently talked about chocolate, and someone mentioned a spicy chocolate (with chili pepper maybe?), I thought you'd be interested, too. I can't wait to try it!

Mexican Hot-Chocolate Cookies

Everyday Food, April 2010

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon chile powder (optional)

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees, with racks in upper and lower thirds. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down side of bowl. Add eggs and beat to combine. With mixer on low, gradually add flour mixture and beat until combined.
  2. In a small bowl, combine remaining 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, and chile powder (if using). Using heaping tablespoons, form balls of dough and roll in cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place, about 3 inches apart, on two parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake until cookies are set in center and begin to crack, about 10 minutes, rotating sheets halfway through. Let cookies cool on sheets on wire racks 5 minutes, then transfer cookies to racks to cool completely. (Store in an airtight container, up to 1 week.)
So what do you think? Something you'd like to try?

  1. By the way...would any of you like to share a recipe on Friday?? I'd just need you to send it to me by Wednesday afternoon along with any photos if you have them. Let me know on here in the comments!

    1. I'll jump in for Friday - I'll be on the road all day, but can join in the comments once we reach Kansas.

You'll have to let me know how to get it to you, though.

    2. Great, Jan!! Just send it all to my missytippens [@] addy. I can check that easier than our yankee-belle addy.

Thank so much!! I look forward to it!

  2. I'd try these cookies, although I'm something of a purist when it comes to chocolate.

Why mess with a good thing?

But there isn't too much chili powder in the recipe...

  3. Jan, we have a friend at church who makes the desserts for our Wednesday night suppers. She always like to make something chocolate for my hubby and has played around a bit. She made brownies with cayenne pepper (I think that's what she used) in them. I loved them!! It just gives it a little kick. :)

I have to admit, I'm a little hesitant about chili powder because of how it would taste like chili. I may substitute some other pepper instead. :)

  4. I don't see messing with a good thing either! chocolate doesn't need any help IMO!
