We'll go at the right time of day to catch them out grazing, and we'll take the back roads that the tourists don't know about. ;)

And one little hike - the President's Trail at Mt. Rushmore. No bison there, only great views of the monument, and once in a while a mountain goat.Jan Drexlerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05609332074458434806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7945786327884906788.post-29560127967781740852016-08-08T16:16:42.907-04:002016-08-08T16:16:42.907-04:00I have been remiss as I wade through a busy summer...I have been remiss as I wade through a busy summer with kids most days.... but I'm so glad I got over here to see this chicken dish AND to think about you avoiding the Sturgis rally.

So most mayo/chicken things I see have you cover the whole breast with mayonaisse/dressing, then with crumbs of some sort, so this is delightfully different! It looks marvelous.

And I can't even imagine having bison and prairie dogs roaming around, but then I'm surrounded by coyotes, deer, bears, raccoons, skunks, weasels (I've only seen TWO, ever) bobcats and badgers. I've never seen a badger except on Disney.

And in the "Bear" books... "Bear Stays Up for Christmas", etc.

When I visit the west, I must go see critters.

I probably won't hike a lot.

Maybe a LITTLE.

:)Ruth Logan Hernehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11550734775151341968noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7945786327884906788.post-36459474150859113402016-08-08T14:03:41.388-04:002016-08-08T14:03:41.388-04:00I answered your comment above about the snakes. We did see one while we were driving last summer, and we've seen a couple in town.

I saw a baby one while walking the dogs one day, but wasn't able to...um..."take care" of him. The babies are the most dangerous, because they haven't learned to conserve their venom based on the circumstances of the bite, so they release it all into the wound.

I had the dogs with me, and no weapon except my boots, but I wasn't going to risk getting close enough for that.

But enough about snakes!

And yes, we leave the dogs at home while hiking. Wynter is getting too old for long treks (1/2 mile is about her limit - our morning walk), and my dear husband has this thing about driving for miles to the park with a whiny Thatcher, and then back home with a muddy one. I don't blame him. :)

The prairie dogs are so much fun! They bark like a Yorkie, kind of. The ones near the road are so used to people you hardly ever hear them. But these were on high alert when we showed up!
Jan Drexlerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05609332074458434806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7945786327884906788.post-28342874076279268222016-08-08T13:56:02.882-04:002016-08-08T13:56:02.882-04:00I was surprised at how yummy this was! We...Yes. And we're very careful. Always aware.

We also go hiking where buffalo roam, and this time of year (rut season), that can be quite dangerous if you come upon a bull unaware. They don't like to be surprised!

But really, is it any more dangerous than walking through city streets? At least the rattlesnakes and buffaloes give you a warning rattle or snuff! :)Jan Drexlerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05609332074458434806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7945786327884906788.post-48803653562375818802016-08-08T13:45:42.338-04:002016-08-08T13:45:42.338-04:00So I've been envious of your hiking trails and...So I've been envious of your hiking trails and spectacular view but then you mentioned rattlesnakes in a comment and I'm totally over the envy thing. ...Good morning, Jan.

That recipe looks delicious.

Those buffalo wallows remind me of something. I had been seeing all these hollowed out circles in the dirt around the trees. I kind of figured it was from squirrels digging. But then one day I saw it. The birds are doing it. I see dozens of sparrows sitting in the dirt, fluttering their wings and hollowing out the hole. I have no idea what they're doing it for since they don't build nests or anything in the hollows.Cate Nolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10424872139114718902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7945786327884906788.post-648630191724195732016-08-08T08:58:33.029-04:002016-08-08T08:58:33.029-04:00Good morning, Sandra!
