Beating the Heat with a Frosty Treat

by Mindy Obenhaus

Summer has settled over Texas and with temps at or near the 100 mark, people are doing whatever they can to stay cool.

When we lived in the suburbs of Dallas-Ft. Worth, we had everything we could possibly want within a five-mile radius of our house. Including a Wendy's. And when the heat was on, one of my husband's favorite treats was a Wendy's Frosty.

Now that we're rural and the nearest Wendy's is 20 minutes away, he decided to find a way to make his own Frosty. So, he did what most of us do, he took to the internet. And the recipe that he came up with is pretty close to the real thing. Not to mention super easy to make if you have a countertop ice cream maker.

There are only three simple ingredients.

Chocolate milk (1 qt), Cool Whip (half of an 8 oz container, thawed) and sweetened condensed milk (half a can).

Place all ingredients in a large measuring cup (8 cups) or bowl.
And whisk to combine.
Pour into freezing container with paddle, according the manufacturer directions. Since ours won't hold a full batch, we place the remaining mixture in the refrigerator until the first batch is done, empty it, then we add the remainder to the freezing container and let it go again.
Once your liquid is in, put the lid on, flip the switch and watch the magic happen.
Let it freeze 20-25 minutes, however that can vary by machine, so be sure to keep watch. You'll know when it reaches that Frosty consistency. Thicker than a milk shake, but not ice cream.
And there you have it. A Wendy's Frosty you've made right in your own kitchen. It's cold, it's refreshing, it's downright yummy.

I have to admit, though, that I always preferred a vanilla Frosty, so one of these days I might have to pick up a container of vanilla milk (yes, our little grocery store actually carries it) and make a batch my way.

So what are things like in your neck of the woods? Are you in the midst of spring or summer? And when it's hot, what's your favorite treat to help beat the heat?

  1. I think I need this.

Not the Frosty, as good as it sounds, but the ice cream maker! What a wonderful summer indulgence!

Even though it's hot summer, is it a little more comfortable in the country than when you lived in the suburbs? Seeing grass and trees around always makes me feel cooler, no matter what the thermometer says!

    1. Jan, I'm not sure it's more comfortable out here, however there is more out here that beckons you to be outside despite the heat. And there's more shade.

As for the ice cream maker, I've had this one for at least a dozen years and I love it. You simply keep the freezer container in the freezer so it's always ready to go. No hassling with ice or salt. If there is a downside, it would be that it doesn't make a lot. Maybe a quart at a time. But if it's just you and hubby, that's perfect, right?

    2. Mindy, mine is like that too. Whatever the inner solution is, it chills everything enough once it's frozen to make the ice cream. What a clever idea!

  2. Oh, I must try this. We have a Cuisinart ice cream maker and I don't get it out nearly often enough... my bad! This would be so much fun with the kiddos, and super easy, Mindy! Thank you for posting it, and thank hubby for loving Frostys!

  4. Well, isn't this clever? I love Wendy's Frosty but haven't had one in years! Like maybe even a decade! But I don't have a freezer machine thingy so I'll have to hunt down a Wendy's when it gets warmer. We had super hot and humid last week and really cool this week...almost like fall which was lovely for sleeping. I honestly like this weather over the crazy heat and humidity though. I'd melt down where you are!

    1. Kav, where have you been? I've missed you. Are you doing okay?

I prefer cool weather over the heat, too, but I'm kinda stuck, so I just have to make the most of it. I do wish we would at least get the occasional cool front, but that's pretty rare this time of year. At least I go to see snow this winter. That was pretty amazing in and of itself.
