Brighter Days on the Horizon

Mindy here, feeling kinda blah. It's been pretty gray on the coastal plains of Texas for the last couple of weeks. Normally, I like gray weather. I mean, I've always said I have dyslexic seasonal effectiveness disorder. In other words, I get tired of the sun.

But these last few weeks have been plain lazy. There's a part of me that wonders if God's not giving us a respite from the disorder and chaos of the last year, now that the renovations are complete and we've pretty much settled into the big house.

But it still drives me crazy. Lazy isn't my style.

However, this cool, rainy weather hasn't motivated me much.
The deer don't seem to mind it, though.
Just the other day I watched this pair meander across the field behind our house for hours.
They didn't even care when the rain picked up. Instead, they stood like statues, until the one on left finally decided to relax and lie down, too.
As a former city-dweller, I can't tell you how much I love watching this.

Despite the cool rains, there are tell-tale signs that spring is on the horizon, though. Bushes are budding.
Signs of new life are everywhere, if you look.
There are even a few flowers.
Yes, hope springs forth. In the garden and in the kitchen as another birthday is celebrated--with cupcakes, of course.
Meaning even when the rain falls, things look just a little bit brighter.
Of course, this smile always brightens my day.
Guess who turned two months old yesterday? She sure is growing fast. Before we know it she'll be crawling, walking, riding a bike!

Oh, this grammy is so not ready for that.

Now it's your turn. Since Missy, Jan and I have talked the last three days about the whole winter/spring transition, I want to know what it is about spring that you look forward to most?

  1. I think you're right about needing a respite after last year's wonderful chaos! So relax for a few weeks. Be lazy. It won't last forever. :-)

I love that you have deer to watch! We used to see the herd that lives in our neighborhood quite often, but since there are at least three times as many houses as when we first moved here, the deer have become shy. We still see their tracks in the snow...but not near the houses anymore. We get a glimpse of the buck once in a while, though. He's big, and has an impressive set of antlers! Smart, too. He must know there's no hunting in the city limits!

And spring! It definitely feels spring-like around here this week, with temps above freezing in the forecast for almost every afternoon. Even with snow on the ground, the warmer temps and the sunshine makes everything springier!

Now I need to make some cupcakes...

    1. Jan, I don't think there's ever a bad time for cupcakes.

You're right, lazy won't last forever. I'll find myself crazy busy again and wondering when I can slow down. So I guess I should just make the most of it.

I do love watching the deer. And whatever else might meander our way. There's just something so graceful about deer, though. I think the one who was lying down first in the photo is pregnant. Her belly looked pretty swollen. So, perhaps, in a few months we'll have a fawn or two trailing their mamas. We just have to either keep the dogs inside or make sure the gate is closed so they can't go after the deer and scare them off.

  2. What stunning views you have! And to have deer neighbours! I might be a teensy bit jealous...but only a wee bit because you also have snake neighbours. Bwahahaha!

It's far from spring here but I am enjoying the increased sunshine and the longer days. Sun is still up close to six in the evening now. And the snow and ice are slowly melting. Not patches of grass or flowers yet but seeing patches of pavement on the roads is exciting. And we have sunny and warmish weather all week (by our Northern standards) so I'm hoping I'll be able to try out my Nordic poles again soon. Need lots of dry pavement for that.

    1. Oh, yes, we want you to get walking again, Kav. I'm sure you're looking forward to it, too. The good news is that March is only two days away, so as long as those days keep getting longer...

    1. I'll pick star-crossed lovers for ten points, Ruthy. And I knew you'd love that baby smile. You just can't help but smile back.

  4. What a sweet baby shot!! Looks like she may have red hair! :) My boys started out red but then turned blonde/brown. My daughter still has strawberry blonde.

Mindy, we've had tons of rain, too, with beautiful spring in between. We're finally seeing the sun again today.

    1. Missy, her complexion has red tones (you ought to see here when she cries), but her hair, or what little there is of it, is kind of a medium blond. She has two uncles who are redheads, though, so we shall see.

Yes, we keep getting a few hours of sunshine wedged between two or three days of gray. Needless to say, when that sun does peek out, though, we head outside.
