What Says Fall to You?

I noticed this sign as I was walking home tonight.

It's on the front of this really pretty restaurant.

The sign made me think of fall, but the beautiful flowers are more in keeping with our summery weather. Which got me to thinking, what says fall to you?

Jan talked about some of her autumn traditions on Monday, including a great new one. But down here, the only firewood scent is still coming from barbecue grills.

Ruthy often shares the very visible signs of fall (and pumpkin season) on a farm.  We do have some of those. I was on Jury Duty today and there was a farmers' market set up in the plaza outside the courthouse. There were some pumpkins, but they mostly still had tomatoes and corn and zucchini.

Fall in the city can be really beautiful, and I hope to share some photos in the upcoming weeks, but on a day when the temps are still in the 80s, it wasn't feeling very fall like. I spent the lunch break sitting on the plaza eating a yogurt and basking in the sun.

 Still, it IS October.

I used this quote from L. M.  Montgomery in a Facebook banner last year. I'm still glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.

I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."

I thought I would leave you with a link for a recipe that transitions from summer into fall.

Butter Strawberry (or Apple) Streusel Oat Squares.

So, does it feel like autumn in your neck of the woods? Or are you still experiencing summer's last gasp?

  1. Mary Cate, it's still be pretty hot here in Georgia. But I'm not a cold weather lover, so I don't mind! My kids were in town over the weekend, and we had a wonderful dinner out on Saturday night, eating on the patio at a restaurant. Just perfect weather.

I guess what says fall to me is the fact we can eat outside and not burn up. LOL

And of course all the pumpkin stuff! Sometimes our pumpkins don't last the whole season around here if the weather stays hot. They can get moldy if there are any bad spots on them.

  2. Those bars look amazing! And wouldn't they be good made with raspberries! :)

We have a breath of summer today. The high is expected to be in the mid-70's, just before another cold front blows in tomorrow, with snow (maybe!) on Friday (?). One can hope!

    2. I vote to enjoy fall in the city! Sounds like it lasts longer. Here in the hills everything changes so fast and I am NOT ready for the dreaded S word Jan mentioned!

  3. I love that "Anne" line!!! Perfect!!!! And yes, fall here is ablaze of color, shape, texture, so many things.... and I never have to decorate the porches any more, because they're part of the farm and Lacey and her mom jump in and take over and make them beautiful.... so nice!

But I do love being in the city, Cate. I love strolling down Brooklyn streets (when it's not really WINDY, RAINY or SNOWY, thank you) and seeing what's out... Zach gets his hair cut in Brooklyn, and it's a great place to live.

    I need apple something.

    Like really badly.

    Mmm..........

  4. Mary Cate, we have finally had a glimpse of fall-like weather in south-central Texas. A wonderful cool front gave us cool mornings and afternoons that were definite open-window weather. A blessed reprieve from 90 degree temps. Of course it didn't last and we're back to hot, but there's another front scheduled to move through this weekend. I love it.

But what says fall to me? Not changing leaves since that doesn't happen until November. So I guess it's things like football, pumpkins and the occasional aroma of a campfire. The sights, sounds and smells, which are different across the country.
