New York Bagels!

Missy Tippens

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that my daughter was studying abroad. On the way back to the U.S., she spent the night with her roommate on Long Island. When she arrived back in Atlanta, she brought us a dozen fresh NY bagels from Manhasset Bagels, compliments of her roomie's mother who'd run to pick them up that morning!

We froze several and have been eating them this past week. Rationing something special to make it last longer! :)

Today, I wanted to share what my daughter made for lunch yesterday. (I'm sorry I only took 2 photos.)

She took an Everything Bagel (topped with onion flakes, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic...yummy stuff!), sliced it in half, then toasted it a bit under the boiler. Then she topped it with the makings of a sandwich.

She layered on slices of turkey then topped with colby-jack cheese, open face style. Then she broiled it again to melt the cheese and warm the turkey.

When she took it out of the oven, she added sliced avocados. Personally, I would love to have added arugula and maybe even tomato slices. You can eat it open faced or put it back together and eat it sandwich style.

Yum!

Here, you can even see how the cheese melted downhill before she put the two pieces back together as a sandwich. :)

  1. Yummy!

We have some great bagel places here, but I don't know if they compare to real NYC bagels or not. But this looks like a great sandwich idea. I'll have to pick up a couple bagels for tomorrow's lunch!

    And welcome home, Missy's daughter!

    1. I have to admit our bagels (at least the ones from the grocery store) don't compare. These were such a wonderful treat!

  2. Missy, you had me at bagels, but I drooled when you said "everything" bagel. Those are my favorites. So much flavor.

  3. I love broiled bagel sandwiches, or "hot" bagel sandwiches. And nobody, I don't care how much anyone argues the point, does real life bagels better than New York City... the home of the immigrants and Ellis Island is the home of the bagel! I featured a bagel maker in "Red Kettle Christmas" a wonderful story set in 1947 Manhattan... and a bagel maker named Arnie. I smile, thinking of that story.

Missy, aren't the amazing bagels? I know folks go for cheesecake and other things in NYC, but I can get great cheesecake anywhere. Heck, I can make great cheesecake!

But getting a great bagel. Now, that's an art.

    1. Interesting theory about the water, Ruthy! And yes, I think it's an art. I've watched a show where they made them and thought, no, that's too much work. :)

    2. Oops, Ruthy, you didn't have the water theory. That was Mary. Sorry!

  4. I'm laughing at the bagel fuss. FINALLY, something I have right within walking distance.

We were actually discussing bagels and bread at the writing conference I was at this week. Some of the out of town teachers were raving about them and said they knew the difference was because of the water. Since people often say that about French baguettes, I guess it makes sense.

Missy, everything bagels are my fav (tied with cinnamon raisin) and I love them with vegetable cream cheese.

    1. Mary Cate, you're so lucky to have them nearby!

Oh, I just realized you had the water theory, not Ruthy. Sounds like a good theory!
