Radishes, the New Potato?

Yep, you read that right.

Did you know the these crunchy, red root vegetables lose their bite when they are cooked?

I was skeptical. I mean, I like radishes as is, but cooked?

Well, a short time ago I was fixing a pot roast. I added my onion and carrots... Then I remembered the notion of radishes as potatoes. Since I had some in the fridge, I tossed them in.

They came out looking cooked red potatoes.

Who'da thunk that brilliant color would go from this to this?

The verdict?

Not bad. The taste was actually closer to cooked carrots or parsnips than a potato. But if you're watching your carbs, you're in luck. Radishes do not have the carbs/sugar content that is in carrots and parsnips.

But don't just take my word for it. My husband, who absolutely hates radishes, thought they were good.

As I studied this new phenomena, I learned that you can even buy matchstick-cut radishes which one could use as a substitute for hash browns.
I have yet to try this one. Though it might happen in the near future.

So what say you? Would you try a cooked radish? Or maybe you've already tried them. If so, what did you think?

    1. I know what you mean, Tina. I'm the only radish person at my house, too. But now that I have more ways to use them...

  2. I love radishes! I've roasted them before in a recipe. But I'll have to throw them in a slow cooker with a roast sometime. What a great idea! :)

    So you didn't peel them?

    1. Nope, no peeling, Missy. I'm curious, though. How were they roasted? Did you simply oil, salt and pepper them?

  3. Love this idea. Hubby loves radishes, but I'm not crazy about them. But a low carb veggie in a stew sounds wonderful. I will try it today as I have radishes and a roast to put in the crock pot. yay

    1. PS, I bet they don't give one gas like a raw radish.

    2. I can wait to use them in stew, Sandra. Might even get my guys to eat them, thinking they're potatoes. ;)

As for the gas, I can't really say since I've never had a problem.

  4. I would never have thought you could cook a radish? Who knew? I mean, seriously, who would even think to try? I am so not adventurous in the kitchen!!!! Intriguing idea that I might just have to try.

    1. Kav, now if I would have thought anyone would have tried this, it would have been you, my vegetarian friend. But now that you know, you have no excuses. Go forth and be adventurous! :D

  5. I have a bag of radishes in the fridge just waiting to be cooked!

I'm glad you described the taste, because I didn't believe all the people who said they tasted just like potatoes. Now turnips or parsnips I can believe. :)

I think I'll try roasting them for supper tonight. I'll let you know how they turn out!

  6. Mindy, this is so cool! My husband loves radishes in his salad, but we hesitate to buy them because they always go bad before we can use them all.

I actually meant to try this with the last bunch, because I remembered Missy posting something about cooked radishes. But I got busy and forgot and they went to mush.

Color me excited to roast radishes!

  7. A gardening tip from a gardening show I just watched. You can plant radishes in with your perennials and just harvest them all summer long. That way you don't have to worry about a bag of radishes from the grocery store going bad in your fridge before you can eat them all up. And, apparently, they provide pretty green foliage and root shade for your flowers. I'm going to try that this summer.

    1. Well, that's good to know. I wonder how they do in clay or sandy soil?

  8. Kav is right, radishes grow quickly and you can plant them in succession and just munch all season long!

What a great idea this is! I'm totally wrapped up in it, because Dave would love radishes with his chuck roast. #happyman!
