Double S Ranch Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies!

LAST WEEK OF WIN IT BEFORE YOU CAN BUY IT!!!! I'VE GOT TWO COPIES OF "BACK IN THE SADDLE" THAT NEED HOMES, SO LEAVE ME A COMMENT, AND I WILL GLADLY TUCK YOUR NAME INTO COLT'S COWBOY HAT!

Double S Ranch Chocolate Chip Cookies
Preheat oven to 350 degrees

4 sticks butter, softened
4 eggs
2 cups sugar
2 cups brown sugar, packed solidly
1/3 cup molasses
2 tbsp. vanilla
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, molasses, vanilla. Mix very well. Then add:

Oops, wait, that's the baby adding flour. DO NOT ADD THE BABY!!!! WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND LETS A BABY SIT ON THE TABLE TO HELP BAKE COOKIES??? (GRINNING!)

6 cups flour (I use bread flour because I love gluten, gluten is my friend. But any flour will do!)
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. salt
5 cups Ghirardelli chocolate chips (2.5 bags unless you buy the big one at Sam’s Club!)
Mix in flour, baking soda and salt at low speed. (I have a dough hook and that works well) When everything is fully mixed, add 5 cups of Ghirardelli Chocolate chips. (You can add chopped nuts here, or miniature chips or M&M's too, those are popular additions on the ranch!)

Drop by rounded spoonsful (or one of those clever cookie dough scoops…) onto a cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart. Bake at 350 for about 10-11 minutes. I make slightly big cookies because the kids love them so much! Use your first tray as a test tray for timing. If cookies come out too flat, add about 1/3 cup flour to the dough and mix again. You want them not too puffy… and not too flat.

We want them just right!

These cookies have been wowin' folks from Upstate NY to the plateaus of the Cascade Mountains, because a great recipe is a great recipe, no matter where it's from!

This is one of our fave recipes on the ranch and in upstate, they are crowd-pleasers! Big and little, these cookies make folks happy!

Leave me a comment below and I'll happily tuck your name into the cowboy hat for two final copies of "Back in the Saddle", courtesy of Waterbrook/Multnomah!!!

And I've got the espresso machine fired up, and a pot of old fashioned joe ready and waitin' so let's talk... what's your family's favorite cookie??? And do you make it or buy it???

  1. Humph -- I read this and went and snitched some chocolate chip cookie dough from the freezer. Not a powerhouse breakfast!! Even though I did have oatmeal first.

Love your kitchen crew! So nice to have company while you work.

I'd say our go-to cookies would be oatmeal...either chocolate chip or cinnamon raisin, we're equal opportunity oatmeal cookie eaters here. And definitely homemade. It's rare for me to buy store bought...though I will admit to a certain fondness of the seasonal cookies at the Swiss bakery close to me. Sugar cookie rounds, sandwiched with jam and decorated with scrumptious icing. Right now they have St. Patrick's Day ones with marzipan shamrocks. Yum!

    1. Kav, those were the kindergarteners when they were LITTLE!!! Eli and Brody and Brody's brother Nolan when their mom (The Lawman's Second Chance) was going through cancer treatment... What a fun look back that was!!!

  2. Oooh, brown sugar AND molasses? I have to try this recipe!

I have to admit, my days of making a batch of cookies at least once a week are behind me...at least until grandchildren start coming along.

But back then, our all time favorite was/is my mother-in-law's oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Just typing that makes my mouth water....

Maybe it's time to make some cookies :)

    1. I love making cookies and cakes but then the temptation to eat them is HUMONGOUS GINORMOUS!!!! But I still do it for the after-school kids, because that just makes them happy.

Jan, I started adding the molasses because dark brown sugar really isn't dark brown any more, and this gives the dough that old-fashioned dark brown sugar background taste we love. That, mixed with the extra vanilla, is like the PERFECT PAIRING of wonderful!!!!

  3. Enjoyed your cookie helpers. Yes, I still make lots of cookies. In fact I made thumbprints and peanut butter cookies last week. My favorites are snicker doodles. Thank you for the chance.

  6. Oh my goodness, I WANT those cookies!! I have a weakness for gooey chocolate chip cookies. I bake all my own stuff, usually. A favorite around here is monster cookies and brownies.

  7. "a great recipe is a great recipe, no matter where it's from"

Sounds like Dr. Seuss wisdom from Ruthy!

I'm with Tina - SNICKERDOODLES! But I'm also a huge fan of oatmeal chocolate chip walnut cookies.

  12. Who lets the baby sit on the table to help bake cookies? A fun Grandma, that's who! I'm going to have to try this recipe. Adding molasses to chocolate chip cookies sounds delicious! Love, love, love your books Ruth Logan Herne!! I pick them up as soon as I see a new one hit the shelves.
