Hot Dog Extravaganza!

Does your refrigerator have enough space for your family's needs?

Ours doesn't, and it is a constant source of frustration.

Go ahead. Blame my disorganization, or the size of our family, or that I go grocery shopping too often (or not often enough). Or like my husband, you can blame the refrigerator itself.

Me? I blame my family's love affair with condiments.

I thought about taking a picture of the condiments on the table during our recent Labor Day Weekend Hot Dog Extravaganza, but it was pretty embarrassing. You'll just have to imagine what it looked like to give us the end results pictured below.

We started out well enough.

My daughter is a no-frills kind of hot dog eater. Meat. Bun. 'Nuff said.

And then one of her brothers chose the ketchup (catsup?) route for one of his dogs.

Here is his other one. Chili, cheese and horseradish. Mmm...

My husband was traditional. He chose mustard, relish and onions for one dog, and chili for the other. Again, Mmmm....

But now we get to the real condiment hounds. My oldest and youngest sons LOVE things like this -

And this (notice the quart size jars!) -

And here is what they ended up with -

Using multiple condiments on hot dogs really isn't a problem, until you try to put the four different kinds of mustards, two kinds of ketchup, hot sauce, relish, chow chow, sauerkraut, two kinds of cheese, etc. back in the fridge.

I'd say we're probably out of control.

I think we've come up with a new reality show idea, though: Refrigerator Horders!

Wait, what? I didn't share a picture of my hot dog?

I eat mine with coleslaw and onions. The best hot dog ever!

What is your favorite way to dress your dogs?

  1. Wait...you can`t have a post about dressing dogs without a picture of your furry dogs all dressed up!!!! LOL

Not fond of tofu dogs so I can`t really comment. But I love a variety of veggie burgers and my favourite way to dress them up is with a bit of pasta sauce and melted cheese. Pretty boring, eh?

    1. Pasta sauce and melted cheese makes me think of "anything" Parmesan. Chicken Parmesan, veggie burger Parmesan.... sounds scrumptious!

And you're right - no pictures of furry dogs dressed up. They like to go "au naturel" :)

  2. Kav, stay tuned. One of these days, I'm going to get to the amazing beet burgers I had during RWA.

Jan, I love condiments better than what they're on most of the time, but now you have me seriously craving a hot dog. Hubby and I used to eat them fairly frequently, then only on Memorial Day, the 4th, and Labor Day. But I'm not sure when the last time was that I had one.

I love horseradish on just about anything. And I've had the mustard, ketchup, sauerkraut, relish, cheese (no chili), but all at separate times.

I love coleslaw on sandwiches but I have never ever had it on a hot dog. Hmmmmm.

I'm with you on the shortage of refrigerator space (though that's better now that the kids are on their own). It's freezer space that sinks me. We need a separate freezer, but there's no place to put on in a NYC apartment.

    1. I wait with bated breath for that beet burger recipe! LOL Have to admit also, that I love coleslaw but have never put it in a sandwich! It's always a side dish...but I might just have to give it a try. Just have to think of a vegetarian alternative to try it with.

    2. I'm with Kav on the beet burger recipe! I can hardly wait! But then, I REALLY love beets :)

We have hot dogs a few times during the summer. It's a great super-quick meal, and we've needed those as I've stretched my writing muscles this summer (met the deadline, though!).

I hear you on the freezer. We bought a small used one 26 years ago, moved it multiple times, and it's still going strong - and always full. I'm not sure what I'd do without it!

    3. Kav, I'm with you on the tofu hot dogs. Aargh. Tofu anything actually. But I have found the most yummy burger patties made with mushrooms. I think I found them at Costco. I have several vegetarian friends so always on the lookout for things to serve them. ALso, Denny's veggie burgers are pretty tasty. I think they are mushroom based also.

    1. It's getting close to lunch time here, and all I'm thinking about are hot dogs. And yes, we do have a few leftovers!

  4. I'm late to the cookout! But I was out of town. I had to laugh. Our refrigerator door is full of condiments (plus jelly and salad dressings). :)

I usually go for mustard and sometimes add onion and chili. :)
