Chocolate Dipped Fruit

So I'm still on this dark chocolate binge - you know to make sure I have enough chromium to combat that sweet tooth.

Lately it's been so hot, I have no interest in cooking. Up here in the northeast, most of us don't have central air. We have room air conditioners in certain rooms. In my case, that's the bedroom. So when it's 89 in my kitchen without the stove on, there's not much incentive to turn it on.  I just want something quick that I can take up and eat in the AC.

Fruit works.

Fruit and chocolate work even better.

I was wandering the aisles of the supermarket looking for inspiration. Everywhere I looked there was chocolate-covered something. Acai and blueberries. Pomegranate seeds. Nuts.

There was also a lovely fresh pineapple.

That inspired me.

I grabbed an apple and an orange too. I was tempted to try a grapefruit, but decided to wait and see how the others came out.

I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story. I'll just add in that it was ridiculously easy. I used my wok on top of a big Le Creuset ceramic pot. You can see how quickly it melted the chocolate.

I'll admit, the pineapple was my favorite - that amazing taste combination of tart and bittersweet. But the orange was surprisingly tasty too. A friend gave me raves on the apple.

I'm inpired to try it with some dried fruits too - apricots maybe.  I did try it with organic, unsweetened coconut. Happiness.

So what do you think? I thought it might be a lot of work, but it was incredibly easy and fast.

One tip: you'll probably have to keep the chocolate warm because the cold fruit made it start to thicken while I was dipping it. The taste didn't change, but the later pieces weren't as smooth.

  1. You are my kind of girl!!!!!!! Anything with chocolate is better, LOL!

Remember fondue everywhere? I think it was back in the times of harvest gold, burnt orange and (sigh....) avocado green.

And rumor has it these colors are enjoying a resurgence. Don't ask me to explain the unexplainable! :) Cate/Mary, Mary Cate (hey, where's Ashley?????) thank you for this!

    1. The burnt orange I can probably handle. The other two give me nightmares.

Ashley is what people call my daughter when they get her name wrong. ;) Must be a family thing.

  2. I'd had chocolate dipped strawberries many times but had my first chocolate dipped pineapple last spring and it was even better than the strawberries. Yum.
What a fun way to eat fruit. Thanks Cate.

    1. Isn't it amazing, Sandra<
Several years ago someone gave me an Edible Arrangement that had chocolate dipped pineapple flowers. I almost threw it out thinking it was so odd. But then I tasted one.

      Oh.My.Stars! Best food combo ever!

  3. I'm like Sandra -- chocolate dipped strawberries have become a staple in June so why haven't I thought of expanding my fruit and chocolate dipping???? Pineapple would be awesome!!!!!!!!!!! Must try that.

And I hear you about the heat. Ugh. No AC at my house at all so it was pretty brutal but we're in the middle of a lovely refreshing cool stretch that's going to last a week so I'm happy dancing again.

    1. I almost started this post saying that everyone dips strawberries so how about something different.

Tanya Agler just posted a vido about watermelon on FB. Made me wonder how that would taste dipped in chocolate.

  4. I need to add in one tip - Make sure you check the oranges for seeds before you dip. Because once the chocolate hardens, you will not be able to differentiate between seeds and chocolate until you chew. Yuck. I learned this the hard way.

  5. I almost did the same thing with an Edible Arrangements basket once -- took one look at chocolate-covered pineapple and thought "okay, that's gross..." Then I tried it. No joke, the pineapple was gone before the strawberries were!

    1. I have to admit, the pineapple was the first of my homemade ones to disappear too. I ate it for breakfast!!!

  6. Chocolate! My favorite food group!

I have to admit, I don't often combine fruit and chocolate (why dilute the chocolate goodness?), but this looks so tempting. I'll have to try it!

    1. Jan, in this case, I think the fruit made it taste even better than the chocolate alone. The downside is, I ate much more of the chocolate than I do when it's just the chips.

  7. I tend to add a bit of cream and pour it over ice cream (totally bypassing the healthy fruit!). :)

  8. LOL I've been trying to figure out what you add the cream to, Missy. The chocolate chips?
