Red Velvet Cake to Finish the Holidays

Granny's Red Velvet Cake
Missy Tippens

As usual, my son requested red velvet cake for his birthday this month. I can't believe it, but my "baby", my middle one, turned 20! How did that happen so quickly??

I've shared the recipe before. (Click here.) It comes from my college roommate's Grandmother. Melinda used to brings slices of this back with her after a weekend at home. It took all my willpower not to eat through the whole plate full as soon as she arrived on Sunday evenings! :)

Since you can click to get the recipe above, I'm just going to share the photos of making the cake this year. It turned out pretty good for a Missy cake.  :)

LOOK! I finally found Softasilk flour!! And check out the recipe card. It's written by Granny, who died several years ago. Once she was gone, I offered the card as a gift to my roommate, but she said she wanted me to have it since I loved Granny's cake so much. So I treasure it!

I think instead of being called The Belle, I just need to be called She Who is Never Prepared and Cooks with Whatever Ingredients She has on Hand. Above, you see that I forgot to buy buttermilk and had to make my own with regular milk and lemon juice. This seems to be a theme of mine. (big sigh)

Sifting the flour and cocoa. I use a lot of chocolate in my recipe. In fact, I use more than Granny did. And I also only use a half a bottle of red food coloring instead of a whole one. Somehow I just can't bring myself to dump a whole bottle in there! :)

You can see it's heavy on the chocolate, not so bright red. And do you remember from last time that the layers, hot out of the oven, get warm milk with sugar drizzled over them? It makes it so moist!

Now, one of my very favorite icings--cream cheese icing. YUM.

At the the last minute, I remembered to take a photo! Thankfully, before it was gone. You'll have to let me know if you make the red velvet recipe!

  1. I've never tasted Red Velvet Cake, despite hearing about it many times. I think it might be the red food colouring that puts me off -- it doesn't seem like a good thing to eat so much of it. But your photos are *very* temping, and I adore cream cheese icing, so maybe.... ;)

    1. Oh, and happy birthday to your son! Our son said turning 20 was the most traumatic birthday ever...it meant leaving the teens behind and having people expect him to be a responsible adult. Ha!!!

    2. Red Velvet cake and cupcakes with cream cheese is my total favorite, elbowing Carrot Cake to second place. Thanks for the recipe reminder.

  2. does it taste like chocolate? if I leave out the red stuff entirely won't change the taster right? no way I can make this though- I'd eat it all and that just wont' do..sigh..I need 80 lbs OFF and got a feeling this ain't the way it's gonna happen!

    1. Susanna, it mostly tastes like chocolate. But I think the red dye dies seem to add some flavor, because it's just a little different.

  3. I'm with Tina; red velvet first and carrot cake second! Love both of them! I don't bake much, but have had dear friends who baked both kinds, and we enjoyed them. I have to share a bittersweet....last red velvet cake we had (at dd request and I took to her house at Christmas one year)....we all dived into the cake ....several had weird expressions....sadly, we realized the "baker" could no longer bake due to dementia...she had put in wrong stuff and the cake was not edible. I paid her for it and bragged on it, but just never ordered another one! So sad when an excellent cook gets like that!
Happy Birthday to your son, Missy!!

    1. Jackie, that's so tough when that happens. Y'all were sweet to be kind about it.

  4. We have mixed feelings about red velvet cake at our house. The oldest son LOVES it and asks for it for almost every birthday. Three more of us are so-so about it. And the last one absolutely hates it. So I rarely make it. In fact, I usually buy a mix.

But wouldn't this be a nice surprise for my oldest son on his next birthday?

By the way, twenty wasn't a traumatic birthday for any of our children. They were too excited about twenty-one being just around the corner. And no, not because they are now able to drink legally, but because of all the other privileges that come with turning twenty-one.

Sigh. They're always in such a hurry to grow up.

  5. You know, red velvet cake is such a funny thing! I used to not like it... and then I found a mix I liked and that made me happy, which is so stinkin' weird! Missy, I agree, pouring a whole bottle of dye into cake just seems wrong, somehow. And I go heavy on the chocolate too, so then why not make a nice, dark chocolate fudgie cake???? But this, with the milk sauce, I bet is marvelous. I can imagine it being just soooo moist! Like a mix of tres leches cake and regular cake. But I'm the only one who likes it, so I think you need to make it sometime when I'm in Georgia, darling! :)
