All Things Pumpkin

What is it about the lowly pumpkin? We ignore it all year and then BOOM. October and November there's nothing but. Oh, wait, I saw that Pumpkin Lattes came out in September and then there was a waterfall of all things pumpkin.

There is something about the bright color. And I've loved seeing the deep orange heirloom pumpkins popping up this year, even the peach.  Not a fan of white ones but they do set off the ones with warmer hues.

Then there is the shape. Some are really round, some squatty but there are no sharp edges. Just kind of comforting. I love holding the miniature ones.

I love pumpkin connections to fairy tales. I caught this one as it morphed into Cinderella's coach.

Pumpkins, by hue or by chew, warm things up. I love this table display I did of heirloom containers. So great for the gray and dark days ahead.

And before we even get to November, I'm already hankering for pie like in this post from last year.

But this year there seems to be more pumpkin EVERYTHING to the point it's being made fun of. So I must ask,

What is your favorite use of pumpkin in decorating, in recipes? Do you get tired of pumpkin or could you eat it all year long?

  1. Pumpkin pies seem to be the tradition around here for a Thanksgiving dessert (the past weekend was Thanksgiving here in Canada), but I have an iced, soft pumpkin cookie recipe, and another one for pumpkin muffins that I make year 'round. So tasty!!

    2. Yes, please share! Lots of friends were celebrating. I've often wondered about any differences we have in the celebration and the commonality.

  2. I'm not a pumpkin fan - always went for the chocolate and other stuff first. the only thing I really like is that the sorta signify fall

    1. Apparently they took over from apples because they are truly seasonal.

  3. I love pumpkin! I love the blend of spices (as long as the cloves are fairly non-existent, I prefer a little heavier on the cinnamon and nutmeg) but pumpkin roll filled with cream cheese icing.... (which freezes very well!), pumpkin pie, pumpkin custard from Abbott's Frozen Custard. Oh, be still my heart. And those pumpkin cookies from last week are AMAZING. Honestly, I do cook pumpkin stuff all fall/winter/spring. Come summer, it's too busy to cook and they're lucky to get sandwich makings in the fridge! Burgers on the grill, 24/7! But that's okay because then we appreciate the fall wind-down!

  4. I LOVE PUMPKINS. Maybe it's because I love Fall.

  5. Pumpkins are the best and I wish they were available year round. But they do signal fall so maybe that is their purpose. Even the Racetrac, the gas station/convenience store chain, has a pumpkin muffin that is very tasty. Much more pumpkin than spice. I have a iced soft cookie recipe that I make year around as well. And my friend Sonali let me know where to get pumpkin fudge, so I'm very happy! (Although I would like some of Ruthy's pumpkin custard, now that I think of it!)

  6. I have two of the small pie pumpkins on my den mantle, a cute tin pumpkin in my yard I found in Fl. and barely got in my suitcase, lol, a wreath at my front door with a sweet pumkin shaped birdhouse in it and a few other pumpkin decorations scattered around. I have never decorated this much in the fall but I saw so many things this year I had to get in the act.

I like your table display of Pumpkins Julie.

We mainly eat pumpkin things this time of the year, probably because that's when they're in season, picked up a pumpkin donut yesterday while running errands and it was good. Piper has my mouth watering at the thought of pumpkin fudge, must hunt some down :)

    1. Pumpkin decor seems more prevalent this year for sure. I love my terra cotta pumpkin the best. And we need to find a pumpkin fudge recipe.

    1. I can't quite go there but I do love the idea of chocolate and pumpkin. I used to think orange and chocolate was a weird combo but I got over it.

  8. When we lived in Indiana, I loved decorating our big front porch with pumpkins and squash!

Then we moved south again. How do you southerners keep your outdoor decorations from disintegrating in the heat????

You've reminded me how much fun it was, though! I haven't done it since we moved north again.

We're hosting Thanksgiving here this year (for church family), and a nice harvest decoration on the front porch would be just the thing to welcome everyone, wouldn't it? Sounds like a weekend project....after I meet my writing deadline!

    1. Sounds great. Oh, the flies, the squirrels, the mold. That's why I switched to terra cotta!

    1. Missy, I have looked for a pumpkin colored blanket for years. But haven't found the right one. I guess it is my Holy Grail of autumn!

  10. I love (nearly) all things pumpkin. We have seen so many on our trip. Pumpkins and mums seem to go hand-in-hand in New England. I can't wait to get home and put out some of our own.

  11. I could never tire of pumpkin. Though, would you believe that I've not had one think pumpkin yet this year? So sad. I need to remedy that.

I used to buy all kinds of pumpkins and decorate for fall, but I just don't have time now. Too much writing going on. That and kids, so I suppose that's a good thing.
