Puff pastry pinwheel cookies.... Sorta.

Hello, everybody!! The Fresh Pioneer is back again with a bit of a kitchen fail.

Oh, this photo? It has nothing to do with anything. I just like to start off every project with some lovely Jonny Lee Miller. *sigh*

Okay, let's begin.
The original recipe called for milk and yeast and waiting...
And then rolling and kneading and chilling.
And then flattening and folding and refolding.
And then putting in whole cubes of fresh butter and folding and chilling and folding some more.

Let me just say the entire process was about as exciting as watching grass grow. Really. And I don't think the final result was any better than store-bought puff pastry. So, unless you have allergies to anything in the store-bought stuff, I'd recommend just skipping the first few (say, seven) steps and going straight to this next one...

Make into a square about 4 inches by 4 inches. Cut into each corner, toward the center, but not completely. (Got that? Really clear? That's 'cause I'm a writer!)

Now, the puff pastry from the store doesn't need to rise, but this one did. So, in the original there was ANOTHER step of about an hour. Let's pretend it didn't happen. Take each lower corner and bring it to the center and pinch it down, repeating until it looks like a pinwheel. Add in your homemade (or not!) raspberry jam.
Ok, theses weren't really beautiful, but they were very tasty!! I want to make some with lemon curd and powdered sugar. Mmmmm....

And just one picture of Mr. Knightley. Why? I have no answer to that question. But I'll sit here eating my buttery jam pinwheels and stare at his picture, working on a response.

Until next time!!

  1. watching grass grow is less clean up (well unless you sit in the grass and get grass stains...) bet they were good but hard for anything with butter and sugar NOT to taste good- unless it's burned like I did with sugar cookies the first time I tried them - darn things - had no idea they hardened AFTER you take them out of the oven.kept waiting..sigh..but I think I missed something - do you eat these raw?!

  2. Hahaha! Sugar cookies are notoriously difficult to make! My sister is the master and I just let her handle those...

  3. What an intriguing cookie idea. I love things with jam in them. Nothing like a jam tart. I imagine these would have a similar taste.

    1. Well, this is more like a croissant with jam. Tarts are a bit more like a 'sandy', right? Usually have some sort of nut flour?

  4. Hmmm, if I had Jonny Lee Miller looking in on me while I bake, would my baking be better or worse? I bet those were awesome out of the oven, warm and flaky, and I shouldn't be looking at tasty treats before breakfast.

  5. Virginia, let me know when you make those with lemon curd and I'll be right over. Love me some lemon curd.

And I'm with you on the store bought pastry. Way easier. And I'm all about easy. Well, most of the time.

  6. I love the homemade puff pastry, mostly because I can control the ingredients....

On the other hand, I haven't made it since BC (before children), which makes it...oh...going on 30 years now....

But raspberry jam? or lemon curd? or blackberry jam?

I'm going to have to try these. Puff pastry going on the grocery list!

    1. I really hate the chemicals they put in that stuff, so I try to make everything from scratch. But there's a point where if it doesn't taste bad, I may just do it. This was an all-day project!

  7. I bet these pinwheels were good--forget the pretty!

Except for pretty Jonny Lee Miller. I don't understand Angelina Jolie. I would have stayed with Jonny. I think he's far better looking than Brad Pitt...

  8. LALALALA! I refusing to hear that part about Angelina! She stalled his career. After they got married, he moved to America with her and helped her launch her world domination... then ended up back in the UK practically unknown.

Brad and Angelina go well together. Jonny needs someone like... me! Haha!

  9. It has taken me years to get past the Angelina incident. Was that before or after Billy Bob Thornton. I guess we all make mistakes, eh?

Last weekend's Austen Marathon was wonderful Two JLMs. The man can rock a cravat, I'm tellin ya!

oh, the pinwheels look amazing, too!
