Simply Saturday Cake Balls: Or How to Doll Up Leftover Cake!

STOP THE PRESSES!!!
THE "TEX" HAS SOLD TO
LOVE INSPIRED BOOKS...
FOLKS, CAKE BALLS CAN WAIT... (but not too long)
but this....

THIS!!!!!
THIS IS NEWS!!!

MINDY OBENHAUS, CO-OWNER AND PROPRIETOR OF THE YANKEE-BELLE CAFE,
CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!!!!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...

Day old cake....

Dull, right?

Boring?

Not stale.... but not FRESH!!!! either...

 See what I mean?
Worn plate....

Day old baked goods.

Crumbs.....

Here's the chocolate version:

Don't you just wanna grab a fork and eat????

OR!!!!  FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO NEVER HAVE LEFTOVER CAKE, GO TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD GROCERY STORE AND:

Buy these...

But we're havin' Mom's Night at my place tomorrow night....

Where all the cute daycare moms get together.

Eat.

Drink punch.

Watch Steel Magnolias

GRAB THE TISSUES!!!!!!

But leftover cake wasn't going to cut it, so:

I smushed up the yellow cake in one bowl, with the frosting....

I smushed up the chocolate cake in another bowl with frosting....

Then I divided the smushed chocolate cake into two bowls.

I chopped up 8 little Reese's peanut butter cups and threw them in one bowl of smushed cake.

Then I added a dollop of the chocolate coating melting on the stove over a pot of hot water.

I mixed.
Then I formed them all into balls:

These are the cake balls with peanut butter cup bits....

Now it's dipping time

I melted dark chocolate Ghirardelli coating bar with milk chocolate chips and added a 1/2 Tablespoon of vegetable oil... then stirred as they melted, until it was all smooth and silky.

I made the mistake of dipping/coating the first one at room temperature.

OOPS.

Cake Ball Down!!!!!
Man Down! Man Down!!!!

:)

So I put them in the freezer for ten minutes.

Ah.

Better!!!  I coated all the balls... I left the yellow cake balls with no garnish.
The chocolate ones got sprinkles.
The peanut butter chocolate cake balls got a tiny swirl of peanut butter,
mixed into the coating as they cooled. A garnish, that's all.
Just enough to tell the difference.
And here they are:

The girls will love them.
And I love the girls.

A win/win!

    1. Okay, so I saw this reply before your original and so I noticed the capital S more and didn't think bit was what you had written!

Let me just share the time as a teen I took typing class and we had to type ALL all down the page. Alas, I mistook the S key for the L key. The teacher was not amused.

    1. Thanks, Kav! You won't have to wait long. Release is scheduled for THIS September!!!

I'm excited, I'm panicked, I'm...in a weird state of surrealness:-)

    2. Kav, as with all my great ideas, it's stolen from someone else. I know Ree Drummond does it... and they're being touted on websites. And they're so stinkin' easy to be so delicious. Really, truly, you could buy a six-pack of cupcakes at the grocer, smush.... add peanut butter cups or candies or nothing.... form into balls.... chill and dip into melted chocolate. Think how easy it is to make themed ones for wedding showers (use the sprinkles in the wedding colors, make white ones with white chocolate coating for "brides' treats", etc.)

    1. Thank you, Piper! Okay, maybe I'll have to share details on Tuesday.

It was a dark and stormy night....

Not really. It was a bright sunny morning!!!

  9. Well, this'll teach me to drop by more often. Don't know when the presses got held, but when I dropped by a little after six this morning, that Yank only had cake balls on the menu. I mean, I hadn't even had breakfast yet and she was cramming cake balls down my throat.

Okay, maybe I was helping myself. But still. A girl's gotta have some protien in the A.M. No matter how yummy said cake balls are.

And I'm with everyone else, Ruthy...leftover cake? Really? In my house, if there's leftover cake, it wasn't that good in the first place.

Ooo, speaking of cake. I need to get in there and make one. My baby is turning fourteen tomorrow. He's now taller than me. (sniff, sniff) That's just not right.

  11. MIndy, I had the same reaction this morning when I came buy so I rushed to comment and congratulate you at Seekerville instead.

But this is your cafe, so you deserve congrats here as well.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I think you deserve a freshly baked cake for yourself for this (no offense to the cake balls, Ruthy. But Ruthy won't hear me anyway because she's probably off eating said cake balls.)

So here's a virtual celebration cake as well as a bouquet of flowers. Only thing is - you have to click the links. :)
