Barbecue Ribs (in the Slow Cooker)

Missy, here. I recently got a great deal on some ribs. And since I didn't have the time for baking and grilling them, I just pulled out the good ol' slow cooker.

These were country style bone-in ribs that were already cut apart. I rubbed on some dry rub.

Then I layered them in the cooker (lined with a slow cooker liner).

I cooked on high for an hour to heat up. Then turned down to low and cooked the rest of the day. About an hour before eating, I made the barbecue sauce.

This is the Neely's Sauce from The Food Network.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 5 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
It called for simmering for over an hour. But I didn't see that until it was time to use it! So I simmered for about 15 minutes and then poured over my ribs. My sauce got to simmer along with the ribs. :)

They turned out good! I do have to complain just a little. For some reason, ribs tend to turn out dry in the slow cooker. Even drowned in juices and sauce. I think I need to rotate them more often so none stay out of the liquid for long.

Enjoy!

  4. These sound so good.

And that sauce would be perfect with baked beans, Kav! Stick some pintos or great northerns in your crock pot for a day and then top them off with that sauce. Mmmm.

I've never tried a rub before - I'll have to look for this one. If our store doesn't carry it, Amazon will, right?

And don't you love those liner for the slow cookers? I use mine about three times a week in the winter, and those liners mean my dishwashers don't complain anymore.

    Win/win!

  5. Kav, Jan's right. This would make great beans!

Jan, I think I bought that rub at the grocery. A friend recommended it. He made amazing ribs on the grill.

  7. a question from the aussie. do ribs have much meat on them? only had them once in Canada and there was almost no meat it was just bones it seemed. didn't really enjoy them but yours seem to have way more meat.

    1. Jenny, it depends in the cut. These were called country style, and they do have a lot of meat. Others don't.

    1. Susanna, don't beat yourself up. You're allowed to get cranky at work sometimes. :)
