Thanksgiving Casualties

Missy, here. I feel like a casualty of Thanksgiving. First off, the scales tell me so. Yep, gained a pound.

But also, my carelessness led to two burns that almost match! One on each hand. Now, how much talent does it take to do that, I ask you?

After Thanksgiving, I'm sick of heavy food. Early this week, I decided I needed to lighten up. And when I went to make my regular diet iced tea, I also decided it was time to take a break from artificial sweetener and drink water.

I don't like water. Have I ever told y'all that?? (Yes, I'm weird.)

So I went back to a recipe that I've used in the past (taken from The Flat Belly Diet). In the Flat Belly Diet, they call it Sassy Water. I love the recipe from that book, but I've also adjusted according to the ingredients I have on hand.

This particular day, I didn't have lemons or cucumber. But I did have ginger and oranges.

First, I got my favorite pitcher and filled it with filtered water. (We have a Pur filter on our faucet.)

Next, I washed and sliced an orange. I squeezed the juice from a couple of the slices into the pitcher. Then I put all the slices in the pitcher. It looks so pretty!

Next, I pulled out the ginger and broke off a little piece, about an inch long. A little goes a long way!

Use a sharp knife and peel the small piece.

Then grate it right into the pitcher using a small grater.

Voila, you have fresh-tasting water that even I can drink! :) I cover with plastic wrap and keep it in the refrigerator. When the water is gone, I add more, making a second pitcher using the same orange slices and whatever is left of the ginger in the bottom of the pitcher.

Next time I'm a klutz and burn myself, I need to have some of this chilled to dunk my hand into!

So who else around here is like me and needs a little flavor to drink water?

  4. Ooo, that looks tender! A little touch of Polysporin, maybe? I don't often burn myself, but I have an exuberant Labrador Retriever who loves to clamber halfway into my lap, and I invariably end up with little scrapes and scratches on my arms and hands from his toenails. (Guess I ought to file them after I clip.)

I like ordinary water as long as it's cold. A little lemon or lime in it is nice, though, so I'll bet the oranges and ginger would be even better.

  5. OWIE!!!! I hate burns! Those look painful! War wounds...

I really, really, really don't like water. I think it's because I grew up in the country with delicious well water. I've never tasted anything like it.

Worst water? LA. No contest. I swear I could scrape it off my glass.

Best water? A place I stayed in British Columbia had some delicious water. Mmmmm.

Now, I just filter and chill it. If I can get it cold enough, I can't taste all the chemicals.

    1. Adelaide water is bad too you it has improve you use to almost need to chew it first.
The sunshine coast in BC (Gisbons) is really good water. Rain water doesn't have the chemicals which is why I like it so much.

    2. The worst water I ever lived with was in Jackson, Michigan. People would drive outside of town and buy water from farmers with wells so they'd have water to drink.

    3. Oh, how awful to have water that bad! I've tasted well water before that tasted rusty to me. Ick. I imagine it was the pipes.

Sometimes when we're at the beach, I can't do the tap water. It has a weird taste.

  6. Jenny, it sounds like you've injured yourself! Did you fall?

I bet rain water would be nice. Do you collect it?

Although I live close enough to Atlanta that I might be drinking pollution if I did that!

    1. Missy, you need to move northwest. The air is so pure up here that the snow is clean!

I hope we have enough snow this year to try some snow ice cream.

  7. I love water - but it has to be filtered. I can't stand the taste of the chemicals.

Our new house came with appliances, so now we have a water dispenser in the door of the fridge, with filtered water and ice (made from filtered water). I'm an ice water junkie. I have at least four 16 ounce glasses a day - more in the summer.

I also like a product from True Lemon that's similar to Crystal Light, except they use stevia as the sweetener. I'll have a glass of that on a hot summer afternoon.

Your lemon/ginger water looks good, though. I'm going to have to try it...

And so sorry about your burns! I hope the meal was worth it :)

    1. Jan, I think I got a sample of the True Lemon once. I'll have to look for it!

Yes, the meal was definitely worth it!! :) And I'm thankful these burns aren't in a spot that moves a lot. So it hasn't been as painful as it could've been.

  8. Mary, I'm glad I'm not the only one! I still can't figure out what I did. I think I was just distracted with all the hoopla all around for the holiday!

  9. Carol, I've gotten a good many scratches from my dogs, too! Just pawing at me to get my attention, usually. :) Yes, they're spoiled rotten!

  12. By the way, I had a post all set to go for today that I had put up before Thanksgiving. It was for crockpot ribs. I thought, NO! I need to do something light this week. LOL You'll get the ribs next Friday. :)

    1. Ribs from a Southern gal? I'm in! I filter my water through a Keurig pod. :)

Hey, we Yanks are made different. 'Sall I'm sayin'. If someone came into my house and saw a pretty pitcher of water in the fridge they'd feel my forehead for a fever....

      Tea, yes.

      Agua?

      Sigh.

      Nope.

And my hot filtered Keurig water.... with maybe a Butter Toffee pod.... and Caramel Macchiato creamer????

Now that's a filter system I can get behind!

    2. Ruthy, I totally cracked up at your comment that you filter your water through your Keirig! LOLOL

  13. I was wondering where the ribs psot went! I saw that and got all excited! And we can watch the recipe and make it later... We've got self-control. We do, we do!

    Ok, we don't.

All this water talk is bringing back memories of best and worst water.

Warsaw, Poland. The air quality was so bad when I moved there that I had to use cough drops to ease my throat until my body adjusted.
But the water? Never could do it. Was actually told NOT to drink it by the locals. But it tasted vile.

Every time I go to Mexico to visit my husband's family I get sick if I eat anything washed in the local water. Hubby says it's a psychological condition- I've convinced myself it will happen.

Strange that ALL Americans seem to have the same psychological problem about their water.

  14. P.S. Chuckling that water got so many comments.
