Magnolias and Gardenias, Oh My

The Belle, here. I got inspired this weekend, snapping shots of some beautiful flowers in my yard and at church. I thought I'd share with you today and give you a taste of the South.

Enjoy!

These two are the wonderful-smelling gardenias on the bush beside my front porch. I wish I could somehow let you smell them! I like to cut blooms and float them in a glass bowl. They make the whole house smell amazing!

Then next shots are of the magnolia trees at my church. I was leaving today with my daughter and her friend, and I knew I had to get a shot of the huge, dinner-plate sized blooms. So I hopped out, telling them I'd only be a minute. :) Which turned into about ten minutes. They smell wonderful as well!

    1. Jenny, me too! Mine tend to struggle, but I just keep re-planting.

I'm so stubborn!!!! But these photos are awesome, Missy Tippens!!!! Oh, I just love the peace and serenity that goes with them!

  2. Stunning photos, Missy. How can anyone look at one of those perfect flowers and not believe in God? There's such purpose and pattern in everything He created. Nothing random at all!!!!

I did some gardening this weekend...it's crazy weather though -- really hot and just a week or so ago really cold for spring and then when it was still the tale end of winter it was hot so my poor flowers are all confused. The summer ones are getting buds when they shouldn't have them yet and the spring ones are like 'forget this I'm going to ground in this heat' and some of the others seem like they are frozen in time not sure if they are coming or going. LOL. BUT my lilac bush is in bloom and I love that smell. And my lily of the valleys are lush in a corner of the house by my front door and have such a delicate scent I can't help but stop and take a deep breath every time I walk by.

  3. Jenny, I love roses too!! In fact, I have a rose perfume I wear from Jo Malone. I only wear it in the spring and summer and have been wearing it again!

  4. Amen, Kav!! God's blessed us with the most gorgeous planet!

LOL on your poor flowers. It's been a bit like that here, too. Although it's mostly just been hot (with one or two cold spells). We've had more rain than usual this spring so everything is lush and green.

  5. Around here the lilacs were at their peak a week ago - heavenly!

And Kav, lily of the valley is one of my favorite flowers, too. My great-grandmother died in 1909, when my grandfather was seven years old. He always wore a lily of the valley in his lapel on Mother's Day in her memory - it was her favorite flower. I never knew either of these people, but my Dad often told the story of his father and lily of the valley.

I'm designing the flower beds for our new house (to put in as soon as a couple other big projects are done), and I have just the spot for lily of the valley!

    1. White coral bells, upon a slender stalk...

Lily of the Valley, take my garden walk.

Oh, don't you wish that you could hear them ring!

That will only happen when the fairies sing!

(a little song that I remember from childhood and sing to my babies, Jan! I love Lily of the Valley but it takes over a garden. I finally went to Ivy because it looks better all summer, but someday I'll plant a patch of Lily of the Valley again. My Grandma Herne loved it, but it wouldn't behave for her, either!)

  6. I also meant to comment on the lilacs! We used to see them some in KY. I LOVE them. But they don't grow down here that I've seen. Too hot. I really miss that fragrance.

I don't think I've ever smelled real lilly of the valley. Just bottled stuff. :)

    1. Yes, Missy, you get gardenias and magnolias, and we get lilacs and lilies of the valley. I love the variety!

  7. Ah Jan, that's such a sweet story about your great-grandpa. Sigh. Are men as gallant these days? You'll have to put that in a book, you know.

This is the first year I've had both lily of the valley and lilacs at the same time and they are competing with their fragrance. The lilac is about two weeks early because of the heat we've had. And my late June beebalm (love that scent too) is already budding. I don't know what my garden will look like by July!

  8. On my wedding day I carried a single gardenia atop a white bible as my wedding bouquet. Gardenias have such a wonderful scent! I also like lilacs, carnations and lily-of-the-valley, and the scent of dried lavender, but I don't wear any of them because they're too heavy and cloying. But wafting from the garden? Heavenly!

  9. hmm so long as I don't have to grow them I like gardenias, wisteria, and roses for scent.

  10. So very late chiming in. I love lilacs and wisteria best, but I also have a magnolia growing in my yard here in Brooklyn. It blooms outside my kitchen window. Unfortunately, it usually blooms too early so it's not yet warm enough to leave the windows open and get the lovely scent. Ours is pinkish white.

  11. Carol, that sounds beautiful! I had gardenias in my bouquet, too! And my husband has loved the fragrance ever since. Since he loves it so, I finally found a perfume that's not too overpowering for me. It's Marc Jacobs (the original one with just his name).

    1. My mother-in-law loves gardenias and had them in her bouquet.

Lovely smell. Enchanting. I love lilacs, too, and they're our city flower up here. We're the Lilac Capital of the World or something like that and our lilac festival is going on right now. Love 'em!

But the perfumes are too strong for me. A bouquet in the kitchen?

      Lovely.

      Perfume?

I think I'm an old lady with no sense of smell remaining!

  12. Susanna, I love the smell of wisteria, too! It blooms around here along the road, and I drive with my windows down, just drinking in the air! It's the same with honeysuckle. :)

    1. my dad used to chop the wisteria just as soon as it got to whre I liked it :-( he said it'd take down a chain link fence and probably a house if left alone - still didn't think it'd have hurt to let it grow at least a little bit

  13. Susanna! Is this our anonymous Susanna, who's now Suzy? Or is this a new Susanna?? :)

And yes, wisteria seems to kill things it grows on!
