Monkey Bread (Yes, you read that right) :)

In honor of all our children who like to climb like little monkeys (see post from last week), I thought I'd share the recipe for Monkey Bread. If you've never had it, then you don't know what you're missing! It's delicious--sweet and gooey. And it's easy. In fact, kids can help! My friend's son is the official Monkey Bread maker in their house and has done so since he was elementary age.

A big thank you to my friend, Kelly, who knew this off the top of her head when I texted her at work yesterday. Yes, this recipe is that important. ;) (Or course, she admitted she just made it this past weekend.) :)

 Monkey Bread

4 tubes of canned biscuits
1-1/2 sticks of margarine (Missy uses butter)
1-2/3 cups sugar (divided)
2 Tbs cinnamon (divided)
Chopped pecans--optional

Melt the margarine/butter. Add 1 cup sugar and 1 Tbs. cinnamon.

Combine 2/3 cup sugar and 1 Tbs. cinnamon in a bowl or ziplock baggie.

Cut 2 cans of biscuits into quarters and roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture (or shake in the baggie). Drop the quarters into a greased Bundt pan. After 2 cans of biscuits, pour half the melted butter mixture over them. (Optional: sprinkle with pecans.) Then do the other 2 cans. Once all biscuits are in the pan, pour the rest of the butter mixture over them. (and sprinkle with more pecans if using)

Bake 400 degrees for 40 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes, then put a plate on top of the pan and flip over. Hopefully, it'll release cleanly!

This stuff is amazing for breakfast or dessert! It also makes a great baked gift. Have you had it before?

  1. I always forget about monkey bread, but I used to love the stuff. It was almost a staple. Thanks for the reminder, Missy. I need to make it again.

  2. I never think of it either, Mindy, unless I have it somewhere else. Then I add the ingredients to my grocery list. :)

Kelly, who shared the recipe yesterday, always gives us a baked treat on Christmas Eve--monkey bread or partially baked cinnamon rolls. Then all we have to do is heat or finish baking and eat on Christmas morning. It's the best gift!!

  4. LOL, yes, I guess so. She's actually on staff with hubby, though. (The Director of the Family Life Center.) And also a good friend. :)

  5. This was a Sunday morning staple at our house when the children were little! I'd also make a quick batch of butter cream frosting, and they'd dip their pieces in it.

I still get requests for monkey bread...but these days the boys rarely get up in time for a cooked breakfast on Sunday. They're at that age - you know, when sleep is only desirable between 2 am and 2 pm? Now they grab a piece of toast and hope that someone at church has started the coffee pot!

  6. Oh, wow, Jan, icing would just take it over the top! :) Kind of like cinnamon rolls with icing. Love those!

My kids like to sleep as well, especially my son. He can get ready quick as a flash on Sunday mornings. Thankfully, the youth have breakfast at church or else he'd never eat at all! :)

  8. LOL, Susanna. Don't you know that all things tasty must have butter in them somewhere???

  9. Butter really is healthy for you, in spite of what you hear. It just isn't good for you in large amounts, like most other things.

    Except chocolate.

  10. I haven't had it for about 8 years now. Guess it's time to break out the ingredients and make some. Thanks for the recipe, I didn't have one of my own. Before tasting it that long ago, I don't remember ever having it.

  12. Oh my - this place is just going to destroy the healthy eating habits I'm TRYING to develop.

I've never had monkey bread but it sounds like my idea of the perfect food.

  13. Yeah, Jan, butter is better for you than margarine. But like all fats, in limited quantity! :)

Mary, I hope you'll try it. I give you permission to splurge. :) It's a really nice holiday treat. Maybe that'll ease your conscience. :)

  15. I was tied up yesterday. Not literally. But, oh, Missy, I have never made monkey bread. I remember telling people about this decades ago when I was...

    A Tupperware Lady.

    And it sounded so good!

Must try. Must try. Must try.
